Men and Women Are Equal Entities - Research Paper Example

Women are been a target of abuse and exploitation, whereas men always dominate them.
The prompt that I am considering responding to is “How are men and women treated differently in modern society?” My working thesis is Gender inequality and my working title is men versus women. The poem that I am considering is a daddy by Sylvia Plath, this poem highlights the male-dominating society through the character of a father, who is excessively dominating and neglects his daughter by being emotionally absent when she needs her ( Plath). This poem depicts the narcissistic attitude of a man towards women. Hence, through this poem, one can realize how a man easily dominates women in society without feeling guilty.
The short story that I am considering is “Hills like white elephant” by Ernest Hemingway, the writer explains how a woman is under immense pressure during pregnancy she is fearful as to how she would raise this child. Her partner who is mentioned as American is shown to be very indifferent towards her, and he convinces her to have an abortion. The “white elephant” (Hemingway) is referred to the unborn child, who only the women can see. This story is also about the relationship between a man and a woman that is ending.
The modern song that I am considering is “Modern Women” by Billy Joel, although the lyricist is a male he beautifully portrays it by using words like “Intellectual” and “confident.” The writer does not look down the women; instead, he sends a powerful message to the readers that a woman today is no longer vulnerable so, men should not take her for granted because she is a “modern woman” (Joel).
The first academic article that I am considering is “men women and murder: gender-specific differences in rates of fatal violence and victimization.” shows the difference in the incidents of homicides involving men and women. Although the male victims were 77% and females victims were found to be just 23 %,( Kellermann & Mercy), the research shows that the incidents of murders of women by their husbands were much higher. Hence, after reading the article one concludes that women in our society are still treated badly and clear discrimination exists.
The second academic article that I am considering is “Gender Discrimination at Work
Connecting Gender Stereotypes, Institutional Policies, and Gender Composition of Workplace.” These articles shed light on a very important problem that women face in the workplace. The article discusses 219 such cases that were brought before Ohio civil rights commission (Zeher). The suffering and fear of women still exist in our society and women do not feel safe and secure while working. This article addresses gender inequality that still exists.
The book that I am considering is “Men are from mar women are from Venus.” Despite the ongoing battle of gender discrimination, many writers today who came up with remarkable solutions for understanding and appreciating differences between males and females, one of those writers is John, Gray. According to him, the differences between men and women are not understood which creates many problems (Gray).
