A critical analysis of the story Leak and film Smart People and their comparisons to each other The writing of Sam Ruddick and the script by Mark Poirier are both spanning tales of familial misery, maybe more suited for the literary realm. They both do extraordinary amount of meandering to arrive at an obvious conclusion. Leak really connects the reader to its crazy amusements in the same manner Smart People does. All the seven characters in both the film and story are entirely different to each other. Oscar is the epitome of chaos. Despite the fact he has a tool box his mother gave him, he still cannot fix the drip until someone fixes it for him. Likewise, the characters in the film too are caught up in a tricky quandary. That is there is nothing there can for themselves to improve their personalities and behaviors. The problem being, of course, that a film and story in which people just do things, wild things, like snapping up on in your ex in the middle of the night, disrupting another person’s house uninvited, and fixing yourself pasta, does not really hold up. Stacy and Chuck have similar characters in both Smart People and the story Leak. Just as Wetherhold wonders whether his adopted brother is crazy, so does Oscar marvel whether his nonprofit friend is mad, shifting emotions from his father’s sickness into his professional life. Further so do we too wonder if these people are mad: how else to explain their behaviors? Successful Hollywood productions are not the only ones to depend upon formula. For this features debut, director Naom Murro has taken his safe course of joining the salvation of the misanthrope narrative. Everything on anticipates from such a legend is found here; the dislikable protagonist who is increasingly cultivated over the course of the tale, the love interest who displays to him the route to redemption, and idiosyncratic supporting characters who offer color and flavor what is lacking, nevertheless, is a rationale for a viewer to become invested in anyone living inside Smart People’s world. To avoid sloppiness, Murro uses a technique that keeps the viewers at arm’s length, but there’s not anything adequately remarkable about his characters to facilitate them to leap off the screen. Smart People is a piece of film apparently crafted by dull-witted persons. The character’s in the play are just drifting along, heads in their heads and hands up their posterior whilst griping and moping their way into another uncertain tomorrow, during which they will awake and start bitching and grousing how crappy yesterday was. Lawrence Wetherhold is played by Dennis Quiad underneath a greasy swab top and a brushy beard. Quiad is a misanthropic college professor who, when he is not deliberately forgetting his students’ names or changing clocks to duck office hours, is out flogging rant raves to publishers who have turned down his treatise and how he is right and every other literary critic in the history of words is wrong. Absurdly, Quiad is an ignorant father who has no idea what his two kids are capable of. His high-school senior daughter Vanessa is too frightened to her father she got into Stanford, while his college son James is a budding poet worthy of New Yorker. The three geniuses in the Wetherhold household can’t and won’t connect. Seemingly, they are separated by the doppelganger of the late Mrs. Wetherhold’s whose clothes are still hanging in the closet like she’s just off to the shopping mall for a bit, and their streaks of genius, which have seemingly devoured their hearts. Most surprisingly, Vanessa who has inherited his father’s high IQ is bent on overachievement, and turned into a stand-in housewife of kind in the absence of her mother who has been dead for seven years. In Quaids’s life come two people who still spur the pot and change his monotonous existence. His never-do-well self-absorbed adoptive brother, Chuck moves uninvited disrupting the Wetherhold’s household and befriends his daughter, who has difficulties connecting to other people her own age. Dr. Janet Hartigan is a former student of the old misanthropic professor, who inconspicuously harbored a crush on him. As time drags on, Quiad and Janet become intimately involved, exerting him to come to grips with his own lack of ability to connect to people, be they his children, his pristine love interest, his students. Put it another way, Smart People is about particularly what the title suggests, smart people. However, what this screenplay is projected to do is to analyze the dysfunctional lives of smart people who may be intellectually savvy, but are not smart enough to see their way out of their own troubles or to learn how to connect to other people on any actual, sentimental level. Leak begins with a redundant dialogue after lovemaking between lovely and married Peyton and the narrator Oscar. At this juncture, Oscar wonders about what influenced his friend to renounce his job and move to Alaska after he had watched a documentary about polar bears. His lover Peyton says you cannot fully understand why people do things. This is a very emblematic short story theme since if tales are frequently about people’s secret life rather than public life, we have to acknowledge the reality that there is no way to understand why people do things they do. Sam Ruddick uses a technique that explores the perception about the mystery of personality by weaving a comic dance relating to four characters. The first instance in the comic dance happens when Oscar’s old girlfriend Stacy comes in on Peyton and Oscar in the middle of the night to fix herself pasta. More sophisticated maneuvers take place when Peyton says she will ring her husband, George, astounding Oscar with the understanding that George knows about his relationship with Peyton. From all the events that take place in the tale, the short story is certainly about the mysticism of motivation; what makes people do the absurd things they do, but chiefly what the author wants is for us to enjoy the jesting comic custom in which an extramarital relationship is no more worthy of human interest than a leaking spigot, for both are an easy fix. Oscar and Chuck to have a certain unique character that makes them analogous to each other. Oscar: a bachelor kind, who is involved in a relationship, is persistently looking for something more, never entirely grown-up or advanced. Moreover, George’s weird actions can only be linked to those of Chuck’s absurdity and inability to relate to people. George inability to confront his wife Peyton about her extramarital affair with Oscar is just entirely weird. George is highly ignorant of the reality before him and it just shows how blind he is. Further, Oscar’s sleeping with both Stacy and Peyton is analogous to Chuck’s overtures to Vanessa. In both Smart People and Leak it is quite evident that both Oscar and Chuck like to be bad. The action of the characters in both the film and story all make sense. However, the illusion here is that characters do not necessarily have to make sense to use, but they, for the most part, have to make sense for themselves. Lawrence is a weird, peevish English professor who has no time for his students who are enthusiastic to learn. His wife’s deceased, his good for nothing adopted brother, Chuck has suddenly showed to up to everybody astonishment. Chuck just appears unexpectedly looking for a handout, and Wetherhold’s daughter, Vanessa. Arguably, Chuck seems to following Quiad’s not-so-happy footsteps. Worse still, Qauid has seizures that deter him from driving. That leaves him Chuck as his special chauffeur. This film and the story Leak best precisely describe the lead characters. In the Leak, Oscar and Peyton are a total disgrace just in the same manner Chuck is.
