Who Should Pay for College? One believes that funding college education for individuals does not only benefit the student per se but it also benefits the society. Positive externalities are said to result from higher education of students. Outcomes include better voting behavior, lower crime rates and economic growth; thus, it is justified that taxpayers’ money should be used to partly finance college education[Pau10]. Guidelines should however be set-up by the government so that only the deserving low-income students will be the beneficiaries this grant from taxpayers’ money.

These grants must be paid though by the students once they get gainful employment. With the current trend towards globalization, America stands to gain if it will produce more college graduates. It is a known fact that Americans are losing job opportunities because of the availability of college graduates from other countries. This situation can be reversed if the government, through taxes collected will be used to finance the education of qualified individuals wanting to get a college degree.

Well-educated workers will definitely be more in demand in the future and the government has to do its part in supporting this demand. “The lesson of history is that more education is better than less. The lesson of the Great Recession is that America took on way too much debt. Let's turn away from borrowing and embrace equity financing in the nation's best and brightest. The investment will provide solid returns for the economy — and society”[Chr10]. This statement sums is all up. Society benefits from education; therefore, the government should be all out in supporting this worthy endeavor.
