She is keen to keep her opinion about the riot to herself. On the contrary, she presents the descriptions of the riots from witnesses, onlookers, and participants and leaves her audience to decide. The play derives its name twilight from one of the characters Twilight Bey presented as one of the last characters. Critically, Bey suggests a solution to America’s problem through his words. According to him, the society can solve its differences. If only the people choose to understand each other.

Twilight Bey is part of the truce gang. Physically, he is short but dark-skinned and has a touch of grace. Bey was a key player in organizing the truce gang between the clips and the blood. He appears towards the end of the play and his name and its symbolism influence the title choice of the play greatly. His words make the audience realize how critical the time of the riots was to the American people. His name twilight suggests the transition between daylight and darkness (Shank 241). During this time, visibility diminishes and one has to struggle to see.

The sun’s illumination fades as darkness slowly creeps in. Bey’s first name suggests that such transition is very critical. In the American context, Smith intended to paint a picture of the reality of the social problems in America. As twilight describes the situation, he was stuck in a limbo, the border between heaven and hell. This was the situation of the Los Angeles society. After the riots, it was at the bridge of collapse. When Bey uses the limbo phrase, he depicts the need of society to find a solution before its too late.

Smith’s intention of writing the play reflects the same need and this makes Bey a critical character in the play. Bey recognizes the need to move from darkness to light, as he does not intend to remain in darkness for a longer period.
