Effect of Society: the Telephone versus the Internet. When one considers the invention of the telephone and the internet, it is evident that both revolutionized society by connecting people far apart in geographical terms. The telephone speeds up communication, links all corners or the world, and serves as an excellent emergency response. However, it can be unequivocally asserted that it is the internet which has the greatest effect on society. Unlike the telephone, which remains largely an instrument of communication, the internet has metamorphosed into a means of entertainment, education, and socialization.

One of the most important ways in which the internet has changed society is in the workplace. The internet gives many people the option of working from home, eliminating the need for commuting and permitting the direct parenting of little children. It has also made possible the Business Process Outsourcing industry, which has drastically changed world economics. Online shopping is the second dramatic change effected by the internet, which has made shopping a virtual experience, widening choice, and minimizing cost, but reducing the social aspect of the experience.

Thirdly, the internet has made entertainment freely available and added the dimension of interactive gaming. This tends to reduce social interaction, with virtual friendships replacing physical interaction. One of the greatest boons of the internet is in the fields of education and medicine, where access to distant villages and remote areas is ensured to provide aid. Finally, the internet has broken the barrier of social class. In the anonymity of the virtual world, everyone enjoys the freedom to express their views, and others remain ignorant of their class, gender, or age.

This is the greatest social freedom. It is evident that although the telephone and the internet are both inventions which revolutionized society, the internet has had the greatest effect on society as a whole. It has changed society in ways that the telephone has not.
