Secularizations Thesis: In “Secularizations” John Neuhaus demonstrates the overlap, which occurs between science and religion in his overview of the sociology of religion.History is expressed as progressive from theological to metaphysical to scientific where scientific is the last stage. This description sets religion as the start of history and science as the finishing point of history. In this case, religion represents the old known ways of doing things, thinking, and judgment of the things around us.

The scientific stage, which is the last stage represent the modern way of doing things and responding to issues around us. This shows that there must have been a progressive transitional in between religion and modernity. It is therefore fit to describe religion as pre-scientific and pre-modern since it precedes modern scientific times in the progression.The transition from pre-scientific to scientific must have been a supernatural one since the two are very different concept wise. Metaphysical stage, which is the centre stage, must have been inevitable.

It acts as the bridge between religion and modernity. Through it, a communal stage where religion and science overlaps is clear hence bringing in the social part of both religion and science. Religion, which was a soft concept socialize with the hard known scientific concepts bringing in the concept of secularization. Religion becomes secular to adopt some scientific concepts while science becomes softer through the interaction. This makes religion to transition from being pre scientific to scientific hence making it fit in the modern world where science thrives.

Science on the other hand creates room for the modernized religion hence making the two adopt secularization. It is in the transition therefore where the overlap between religion and science can be evident since the two have to adapt to each other.
