English 29 January Context paper English 105 The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Indianapolis is a part of the Roman Catholic Church in America. It was originally set up as the Diocese of Vincennes, Indiana. It was established on May 6, 1834. “The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Indianapolis comprises of 150 parishes, 71 schools, six Catholic Charity agencies and many offices of ministry across central and southern Indiana” (Archdiocese of Indianapolis). Among these institutions Ryves Youth Center has been a big hit.

Established in 1982, the Ryves youth center, also known as Ryves hall, has proved to be the second home for children of all ages in the Terre Haute locality regardless of race or money. The centre has proved itself as a sign of prosperity and hope for the locals. Their primary mission is to assist children and families in the areas of Terra haute, “which is one of the most impoverished areas” (Goyder par. 2). They serve families who lack education facilities, unemployment, hunger and poverty.

The main advantage of their program is that their services are free of cost to all children who walk to them for help. They provide free meals service, educational support, sports training, crisis interventions, computer education etc to the youth, who are in need of assistance. The main purpose of the Ryves Youth Center is “to address the needs of the youth and to give them a better chance in life” (The White House). The center provides after school services to youth, who lacks provisions at home and they provide free games, homework help, food and care to them.

They serve thousands of inner city youth. Most of these youths do not have guardians to take care of them and these youths belong to below poverty line. “Approximately 95% of the youths attending Ryves Youth Center live at or below the poverty level and many of them don’t have a permanent home, move frequently throughout the year, or are homeless” (Ryves Community Optimist Club (RCOC) par. 3). These children lack the advantages that other kids with parents have. Most of the children have experienced or witnessed physical, sexual and emotional abuse, suicidal thoughts, low self esteem and anger control.

They are homeless or castaways and majority of those children feel lost and alone. Ryves Youth Center provides shelter to these kids and takes care of the children like their own kids. They give them guidance and hope for the future. They shape them to be a better person, create a whole new world for them and keep them off the streets.  Education is given top priority in the Ryves Youth Center as education opens door for everything in life and it is the only solution to come out of poverty. As education is given a high importance, the youth centre also has a good library for the children, so that they can come and read books to expand their knowledge.

They also try their best to provide the latest technological facilities to the children. They also offer computer labs to the children to expand their knowledge. Apart from this, the centre also has many volunteers to offer tuition to the children in different subjects. The staffs of the center as well as the volunteers act as a surrogate family to the children who come to them. Ryves Youth Center runs on donation made by many people across the states. All the computers that are used at the center are also donated by private companies.

Ryves youth center is a second home to its children. It gives a second chance to these children and gives them a better future that the children can only dream about. It is a safe haven for children in the Ryves Neighborhood in Terre Haute.  Work CitedArchdiocese of Indianapolis. The Catholic Church in Central and Southern Indiana. 2006. Web. 29 January 2012.
