Risky behavior due to technological advancement is using phones while walking on the streets. Lately, distracted driving has been getting much attention than pedestrians who walk and send messages at the same time, but it is equally dangerous. Distracted walking, which is usually caused by electronic devices is an increasing problem that occurs when one is trying to multi-task. In this mobile phone era, there is an increase in accidents caused by cell phone users (Ritchel, 2010). According to Ritchel in his New York Times article, more than a thousand pedestrians were admitted in 2010 in the emergency rooms due to accidents that occurred while they were on their mobile devices.
There is a growing perception among young people that single-tasking is a waste of time and unproductive and this makes them use phones while walking on the streets. Cell phone conversations demand not just auditory concentration, but the individual also tries to visualize the conversation thus obscuring the surrounding environment the individual is in. Accidents that occur when one is distracted by an electronic device are usually embarrassing since they could easily be avoided.
