By: As society progresses to 21st century, the idea of marijuana and other legaldrugs continues to be the focal point of hot controversy. Marijuana is a drug that has many inducing effects that can cause pleasure and “buzz.” However, these same properties have given it a bad reputation for being a harmful drug. In this assertion, the legalization of marijuana should be enacted because it offers medical purposes, the cost effective principle, and the fact that it infringes on the rights of an individual.

The first reason why marijuana should be legal is due to the fact that it has many medical purposes. As a matter of fact, marijuana is proven to enhance appetite and relieve nausea in cancer and AIDS patients. Many people use marijuana because they are suffering from certain diseases that have plagued their lives. Clearly, marijuana provides relief from pain, nauseua, and other symptoms that cannot be treated with conventional methods of medicine. Several Americans insist that marijuana for inhibition purposes also.

Furthermore, this drug has very low dependence of addiction and side-effects. Most marijuana users also insist that they tend to develop tolerance to many of the effect that this substance offers. Users also refute the fact that this drug is more dangerous than alcohol and tobacco.The second critical reason why marijuana should be legalized is the fact that maintaining marijuana out of society is expensive due to its illegal nature. Keeping marijuana illegal is expensive because it induces authorities to be in constant search of funding.

In the United States, the government has gone on this myriad against “War on Drugs.” Currently, the US government spends a hefty amount of money to choose individuals who are regular marijuana users regardless of their need and want. These individuals get thrown in the prisons on a daily basis. Undoubtedly, these same funds can be allocated to pursue education, Medicare, social security and national defense. In an ideal world in which marijuana would be legal, the federal government would be able to impose taxes on it.

Furthermore, it would have extra revenue that it could allocate for essential drug education program. It is evident that there is no solid evidence that prohibition of the drug will force society to diminish its use. Additionally, marijuana is widely available in schools as dealers understand that no set age limit is enacted. Seen as the “forbidden fruit” by many teenagers, the drug continues to attract students to relieve their stress.The “icing on the cake” that proves that marijuana should be legalized is due to the fact that people should be at liberty to decide themselves if they want to legalize marijuana or not.

From an individualstic perspective, it clearly makes sense that marijuana should not be illegal due to a huge misconception that its “dangerous.” Undoubtedly, the government has the right to protect its people; however, it does not have the right to infringe upon right of every person to choose what harms him or her. Every mature adult is completely responsible and is well-aware of the benefits as well as the detriments of marijuana. If the government deems that an individual’s action poses a risk to society, it has the right to make that substance illegal.

However, after conducive research, it is clear that marijuana is not as dangerous as other legal substances such as tobacco and alcohol.Clearly, marijuana should be legalized because it has medical purposes, is cost effective, and does not infringe on the rights of citizens. With every drug, one must understand that use and abuse is essential. However, to deem one particular substance as illegal without understanding the true nature of it is illogical and not lucrative. It will be interesting to see how the US government will face these issue in this next generation.
