How to Write an Essay Subject: Essay Strengths and Weaknesses I am writing this letter in response to the essay provided on writing an essay and the work which is involved in completing a specific subject. I would like to point out the strengths and weaknesses of the given essay topic, while providing insight into how the essay could work better. The strengths of the essay begin with the thesis statement pointed out in the first paragraph. The essay states that an essay can be good or bad, as someone writes it. The points that follow are based on how this is done, with adequate proof on what it takes to write an essay that stands out from the rest. The information provided is solid proof of what it takes to write an essay as well as what the effective methods are in grabbing the attention of the reader. The paragraphs that follow the thesis statement are logically organized and all follow the thesis statement and points that are made. Each clearly defines one point that relates to the main topic. The paragraphs also give examples and opinions that are followed by facts. Each of the paragraphs works independently to show the main point of the essay while providing organization that relates to the overall thesis of the paper. More important, each of the paragraphs in the paper move through a chronological order that defines the process of writing, editing and creating a solid paper. For an individual who is learning to write an essay, this provides effective methods that are logical and supported through the thesis. Even though there are adequate points in the body paragraphs, some of the details provided are irrelevant. The examples that are given and some of the statements made drive away from the main thesis and take away from the objective of the paper. For instance, in paragraph 4, the author begins speaking about organization processes for a thesis paper and not having this as being a distraction. The very next sentence distracts the reader by talking about a television or a younger sister screaming. The reader begins to think about these situations, as opposed to the organization needed to write a paper. The concepts in the paper can be improved with revisions that would enhance the paper. The most important revision to make is from the unnecessary statements and examples that take the reader out of the main subject of the paper. Paragraph 4 is the most common sentence that does this. It is followed by other sentences that have the same distraction. The second change in the paper is to recheck the grammar and phrasing of sentences. For instance, in paragraph 2, the writer states “Only through sorting through your ideas can you pick out the ones that would be the most interesting and rewarding for your readers.” A more direct statement would be “Sort through your ideas and pick out a topic for your target audience.” Being more direct, not as wordy and phrasing the sentences so they are grammatically correct will improve the flow of the paper. The third edit to be made with the paper is based on the use of chronological sequences in the essay. The writer begins by sating first, second, next and last at the beginning of each paragraph. However, after stating the last tip, the author gives three more paragraphs of information with another last step two paragraphs later. Changing some of the transitional sentences and re-working this part of the organization will provide a stronger flow to the paper. More important, it will help the reader to find the logical explanations of writing a paper. Skeleton Essay The ability to write an effective paper is seen through the skeleton essay as well as examples used in Unit 1. The guidance given allows one to write a better paper so readers can understand the main point. The approach to writing an organized, thoughtful and insightful paper relies on following the craft and model of different essays. By doing this, one is easily able to grab the attention of the audience and build a well – crafted essay. Approaching an essay or paper with specific techniques will lead to the overall success of communicating a specific point. The first concept to keep in mind when writing an effective paper is to prepare the space in which one is in. The work environment and organization of a space all need to be set in place before one starts. If distractions occur, then there isn’t the ability to write a paper effectively and some of the problems with writing may arise. More important, the language and the way in which one focuses may become problematic. Changing the environment to ensure that complete focus is on writing the paper will change the level of concentration while helping to work on a given topic. The next step to writing an effective paper is to work on a thesis statement. The thesis is the driving force of the paper. It works as a foundation for the body paragraphs that follow and provides a strong basis for writing. However, a thesis statement has to contain a focus on the paper that won’t divert later on in the writing. More important, the thesis should be related to a topic which is factual and which can be proven. For instance, in the skeleton essay, the thesis is, “Mickey’s mischievous personality is expressed, to the attentive observer, in the intricate movements of his eyes, ears, and paws.” The thesis is defined, focused and centers the attention on the cat of Mickey and the personality he has. The body paragraphs are the next focus of the paper. These should first be defined by organizing the paper. Each contains one category or a topic that will be worked on in the paragraph. The paragraphs prove the main thesis in the first paragraph and show how the statements are true. After the main categories are defined, one can work on completing the paragraphs with four different types of sentences. These include facts, data, details, examples and quotes. The proof behind the main point shows that the thesis statement is correct and helps the paragraphs to move in a logical order to the overall objectives of the paper. The last step is to draw the conclusion of the paper. There should be a transition sentence to the conclusion of the paper. The conclusion should refer to the main thesis statement as well as the overall points in the body paragraphs. The summaries of what was stated in the essay should be focused on in the conclusion, all which are used to show the interpretation of the thesis. The point of the conclusion is not only to tie together the main points but to show how the thesis was proven and how the main sentence pointed out was correct. The conclusion should prove to the reader that the statements and objectives in the essay were reached and are believable. Organizing and crafting an essay in this way provides a stronger basis for the reader and shows how an essay can prove specific points through the thesis, main points and conclusion. Read More
