Unit 16: A Comment On A Commitment Introduction Colleges and universities as s of higher learning are integral parts of the society. Such facilities interact with the society on different platforms including the fact that all the stakeholders in such facilities are members of the larger societies. This implies that the colleges and universities must equally participate in the eradication of carbon products in order to protect the environment. As such, Diablo Valley College has undertaken various projects that seek to safeguard the environment by containing the emission of greenhouse gases, which deplete the ozone layer thereby causing global warming. With such extensive environmental conservation programs, the college’s president must therefore take part in the forthcoming climate commitment. Diablo Valley College will sign the commitment owing to the environmental management skills the college is likely to acquire from such as discussed in the essay below. Participating in the commitment will help position the college as an integral member of the society joining in the fight to eradicate environmental pollution thereby making the environment safer and better. At such conferences, delegates learn newer and better ways of eradicating environmental degradation besides the presentation of the projects the colleges undertake in eliminating such. The commitments present an effective opportunity for the students’ president to present the college’s green projects all of which have sought to improve the sustainability of the environment (Schlossberg 121). Global warming is a topic of global concern. The emission of carbon monoxide into the atmosphere has contributed to the depletion of the ozone layer, which is a layer of oxygen molecules that cushion the earth from the harsh rays of the sun. The depletion of the layer leaves the earth surface vulnerable to increased temperatures among other undesirable diseases as harsh rays of the sun penetrate the atmosphere. Effects of global warming include climatic change and the rising water levels as the glaciers continue to melt. Such natural phenomenon has diverse effects ranging from unique skin diseases to the rising incidences of typhoons among other natural calamities. The depletion of the ozone layer threatens both the stability of the earth and the life in the planet. It thus becomes a prerogative of the citizens to curb the emission of such harmful gases by engaging in responsive activities. Among the contributors of the gases is the use of fossil fuels such as petroleum products in propelling cars among other machines. At such environmental commitments, the leaders discuss the efforts by both the students’ fraternity and the government in order to limit the emission of such gases (Reza 31). As policy makers, student leaders are influential members of the society responsible for the activities and behavior of the students while at the colleges. The leaders therefore act as the bridge between the students and the leadership of the universities. As such, their participation in the environmental commitment is paramount, as it will facilitate the spread of the message to the students thus improving their appreciation of the various projects at the universities and colleges. The Diablo Valley College just as any other institution of higher learning has hundreds of students all of who require transportation and use various substances in the society that may equally contribute to the emission of the toxic gases. They therefore require appropriate knowledge on environmental management in order to improve the desirable environmental practices. To achieve such, the college has undertaken various projects that promise such effective and desirable environmental practices (Karen and Ricardo 55). By participating in the forthcoming commitment, the students, leadership will learn newer and better management practices in order to improve the success of such projects. The success of the said projects relies on the students’ appreciation. The students must comply with the college’s stipulations on environmental management and therefore appreciate the projects. In order to achieve such acceptance of the projects, the management of the facility must incorporate the student leadership through such interactive platforms as the forthcoming commitment in which the leaders will share ideas and adopt new ways of containing environmental pollution. The student leaders are motivational factors in the colleges, they influence the behavior and actions of their colleagues and their participation in such platforms is therefore consequential in the attainment of the environmental goals (Chant 28). Among the green projects that the college has undertaken include the new transit center. The center provides the students with efficient and green transportation system thereby eliminating the conventional means of transport. The new hybrid buses connect the college to the neighboring counties. Through the buses, the management sought to eliminate private cars and motorcycles that students had used previously. In the past, more than the three thousand students would use various means of transport including cars and motorbikes among others. The same was the case with the other stakeholders such as the lecturers and the non-teaching staff. Such would not only fill up the parking lots but also contribute to the emission of carbon monoxide among other toxic gases. With the introduction of the new hybrid buses, the management of the college seeks to eradicate, all the private cars thereby reclaim the parking lots. Additionally, the school has rolled out an extensive solar panel system. Solar is an efficient source of energy. Such does not leave any residue thereby producing clean energy. All the parking lots currently have wide solar panel roofs that trap the sunlight thereby providing the college with the much-desired green energy. The production of green energy is integral in achieving a toxic free society. Sunlight produces efficient energy used in operating machines just as with hydroelectric power. Unlike hydroelectric power, solar energy requires fewer resources. Additionally, the energy propels machines just as any other diesel ran generator. Before the installation of the solar panels, the college had massive stand by generators that would operate the college in case of power outages. By eliminating the use of diesel generators, the solar panels overcome an environmental hazard by providing a more efficient way of producing energy. The alternative energy project is a positive move towards achieving a society free from carbon. Additionally, the installation of the panels provides the students with an opportunity to foster careers in engineering as they have practical experiences with the solar panels. They use such resources and repair them in case of breakdowns. The fact that the world continues to appreciate the use of green energy sustains the future of both the technology and the professional technical knowhow the students acquire by maintaining the solar panels (Clark 21). The solar panels therefore provide the university students with an appropriate opportunity to develop and maintain profitable career prospects. The college has an appropriate garbage collection and recycling project that seeks to minimize the consumption of stay form products. Stay form is a precarious product that contaminates water supplies in case of contacts. This makes such substances risky especially in wet weather when they can easily contaminate water sources. The college on the other hand is free from such substances. In order to achieve effective garbage management, the college has distinct garbage cans with blue cans used to dump all paper products only while brown cans accommodate and assortment of aluminum among other scrap metal refuse. This way, the college strives to improve the culture of recycling products as a way of eliminating environmental pollution. Through such projects, the university seeks to position itself as a pioneer in the environmental management plan thereby improving positive behavior and approach to environmental projects. In brief, the participation of the Diablo Valley College students’ leaders in the forthcoming commitment is essential in improving the environmental management projects. The discussion above of the various projects in the college portrays the culture in the college. The students among other stakeholders in the college have appreciated the green initiatives thereby restructuring their lifestyles in the college to accommodate the new measure. As a culture, the students require constant remainder and their voluntary participation in the projects. Attitudes play an integral role in the appreciation of such cultures, with this understanding the student leaders must therefore participate in the commitment and acquire better ways of managing both their colleagues and their environment by instilling the environmental management culture in the students. Environmental management is a collective responsibility that requires the participation and appreciation of every student. The student leaders act as a unifying factor capable of concerting all the students’ effort towards the achievement of the specific environmental goals in the college. Works cited Chant, Scholes.
