He further discusses the implications of these perceptions with American being at the center of the world. America has acquired a lot of power due to success of its practice of democracy and capitalism. This has come with the challenge of the Americans thinking that the rest of the world does not matter. The American has developed this wrong perception of the rest of the world, because unlike other European countries, they are less likely to travel to other countries. America is an isolated country with only two neighboring countries Mexico and Canada.
Travelling to other countries would require taking a plane. It is only the affluent and educated who get to travel beyond the American borders. This form of isolation has led to America developing as a unique entity separate from the rest of the world. Americans are also less likely to invest in learning a second language (Brooks, 32). This is because American products dominate almost every aspect of the global economy and they thus do not see the need to learn a foreign language to help in foreign trade.
The world elites have expressed their sentiments about America which range from critique of some of its aspects to sympathizing with its policies. The American entertainment industry has a whooping large world presence even in non-English speaking nations where the language is interpreted by the use of subtitle. The world views American to be more patriotic than they actually are.
This is in the last elections; there was only a 78% voter turnout which is lower than that of other countries that are considered to be less patriotic. I think to some degree the expression of patriotism by Americans is chauvinistic. Although America is economically and politically powerful, there is need for it rebrands its image to the world. This is because we are living in a global village and to ensure global economic and political development, all nations should be able to coexist and have respect for each other.
America can show their interest of other nations by studying their language and culture and not just what they read on reports. For instance, there are some Americans that still believe that African live on trees. A person coming from Africa may be
