? Reading Techniques Analyzing Reading Techniques Reading techniques are essential so as to comprehend study or to conduct a useful research. These fundamentally include: skimming, scanning and slow reading. All of them are required for different purposes at different stages of academics. This paper aims to critically analyze and evaluate the reading techniques used in academic tasks such as initial investigation or research, reading the exam paper or a random journal article. All of these reading procedures involve entirely different techniques primarily depending upon the subject area. In order to critically analyze this topic research has been conducted on the relationship between sociology and nursing. The required data has been collected from book, online source and a research article. The latter topic will actually facilitate in analyzing the reading techniques more deeply. Task 1 Sociology Broadly Sociology is the science and study of human society which is governed by different principles, values, customs, traditions, cultures, religions, languages, practices, beliefs etc (Denny, 2005, p. 7-29). Hence it can be said that sociology is closely associated with all these factors while making their implementation more effective. Moreover, it deals with the deep description of human activities which have direct or an indirect impact on the overall community. Humans are interrelated with one another and therefore it is almost impossible for people to live in complete isolation. This subsequently gives way to the formation of societies where people belonging to same characteristics are bonded to live together. These bonds are based upon mutual understanding and similar outlook towards life. Thus sociology is not only an impact aspect to define human nature rather it also plays a vital role in the formulation of different economic and political activities (Denny, 2005, p. 7-29). Sociology basically starts with the formation of a strong socialization factor which indicates the norms, roles and cultures for a particular group of individuals. Additionally, it is responsible to design the overall social structure which gives certain privileges to its members. For instance, the institution of family is a part of social structure which largely supports different economic activities while giving rise to a comparatively healthy and mentally sound society. Since sociology closely deals with the different aspects and choices of human beings therefore it also corresponds to the medical sciences especially in the area of nursing (Denny, 2005, p. 7-29). To further investigate the relationship between sociology and nursing following questions are devised: How the sociological data helps in nursing practices? How the progress in sociology helps in the development of nursing? What is the role performance of sociology and nursing particularly in psychiatric situation? Relationship between Sociology and Nursing The relationship between sociology and nursing is a widely studied subject as it significantly helps the healthcare professionals to improve their services. On the other hand it is very crucial for sociologist to anticipate the contemporary medical issues prevailing in the society. Hence they both strong correlate with one another while mutually benefitting the entire community (Denny, 2005, p. 7-29). Research indicates the following answers for the above projected questions: The historic or modern sociological data throw new radiance to the discovery and treatment of major illnesses and health issues. For instance, some of the diseases are actually originated due to certain social behaviors or deviance from societal norms such as the lung cancer. This might be caused by alcoholism which a major social issue. Although the effective and efficient use of sociological data is somewhat dependent upon the health providers but on the whole it enlightens the nursing practices through revealing new researches (Handsley, 2009, p. 26). Christakis, a renowned sociologist, has argued upon the development in social sciences in his latest online article. He has presented his view that sociology along with other areas of social sciences is lacking behind in progress and development. This has also affected the overall development in nursing practices. Since there hasn’t been any advancement in sociology therefore today nurses have to depend upon the old sociological tools and techniques (Christakis, 2013). Sociology significantly helps in nursing practices especially relating to psychiatry. This is particularly because it differentiates among groups of people on the basis of similar mental abilities and thinking patterns. It subsequently helps the nurses to analyze psycho patients through their social backgrounds (Handsley, 2009, p. 26). Summary Sociology is one of the most important branches of social sciences which especially deal with the study of human development, their activities and various other aspects. Moreover, it has a very strong affiliation with nursing because healthcare providers are required to develop clear understanding of the social patterns prevailing in the society. This actually helps them to formulate nursing methodologies and techniques while extending healthcare services with complete assurance. Task 2 Analysis of Reading Techniques The three basic reading techniques including skimming, scanning and slow reading have immensely helped me in preparation of this paper. However, they are also used in different academic tasks which are discussed below. Reading for initial investigation or research of a new topic: I would use skimming and scanning particularly for the initial data collection on a new research topic because it saves time. Additionally, preliminary investigation does not require peculiar details on the topic therefore it is more feasible to skim through different books, websites or journal articles in order to extract the main information. Reading during an exam: Slow reading is crucial during an exam because here I am required to first understand the question and its basic requirement to answer it. Slow reading also allows an individual to grasp the fundamental exam requirements. However, I would not use skimming and scanning techniques during exams because these can overlook an important piece of information. Reading a Journal Article: Skimming, scanning and slow reading are all equally important for comprehending a specific journal article. Skimming allows me to locate the most interesting part of article while scanning reveals the overall concept of the writer. On the other hand slow reading helps me in grasping the required information in a way that I can recall it when needed. References Christakis, N.A. 2013.
