The writer uses examples from other people that they have observed children becoming serious over the period of time illustrates that we are developing an attitude in our coming generation that forces them to develop dislike for play by turning them into a job like routine. Children who have been rejected at such early age also chose not to participate in other sports-related activities due to lack of confidence despite having talent. The writer further shows her advocacy for expression of sensitivity by the team coaches, parents and managers while dealing with children of such young age. Hence, by making elders learn how to deal with such young children and altering the nature of the game according to capabilities of the children, the game can remain a game for them instead of turning into a high competitive job or a cut throat assignment.

Response In my opinion, Jessica Statsky (n.p) has made a fairly strong point. . According to her, children who play competitive sports at young age are more likely to drop out and not pursue their studies. I have come across several studies about reasons of early dropouts however I could not find concrete researches supporting this claim. Secondly, she has put more emphasis on coaches and managers of junior players’ teams but I believe that the actual emphasis should be on the parents. If parents chose not to get their children feel the pressure for which they are obviously not ready, organizations and sports clubs will have to alter their strategies eventually.

Also, I believe that there will be rather limited number of parents who force their children to be part of such competitive sports due to their own ambitions. The underlying motive can be increasing child’s prospects for better future. Having said that, one cannot undermine the negative impacts of competitive organized sports for children as suggested by Statsky (n.p). Where it is evident that failures and accomplishments have a direct impact on an individual’s self-esteem, it is obvious that such impact will be amplified in case of small children with little awareness of important things in life.

Same goes for fear of injuries. I have witnessed some of the elders around me develop fear of activities like mountain climbing and speed racing after facing serious accidents and injuries. Imagine a child’s reaction after facing a dislocated shoulder or terrible bleeding. It is important to note that Statsky’s (n.p) strategy of saving children from trauma caused by organized sports at junior level, can be the foundation of new regime however it does not provide a holistic approach of
