On the other hand, according to several survey reports, a huge number of people within the US believe that same-sex marriage should be recognized and legalized. The whole population can be segmented into two groups: one group is in favor of same sex marriage while another group opposes it. The law of nature, civil rights, human rights and judiciary system are highly involved in this topic of same-sex marriage. The positive views put forward by the current president of the country were gleefully appreciated by a major portion of the population. One of the biggest fight in America, is the fight for equality. In the fifties and sixties, black Americans fought for equal rights, and this was one of the longest and most publicized fight since the abolishment of slavery. Today there is a new, tempestuous issue on the horizon— the legalizing same sex marriage.
Some states approved domestic partnerships or civil unions specifically for gay and lesbian couples that want to be married but there are still debates over marriage equality because these alternative unions only afford a measure of legal protection and not the rights as married couples. The aim of this essay if to examine the various protections and right accorded to same-sex couples in the United States.
The author states that the legal issues associated with the same-sex marriage are complicated by the federal government of the United States. According to a significant part of US population, same-sex marriage should not be legalized in the US. Marriage is a matter of civil law. It is not the particular church affair.
If, as the argument goes, there has not been a fundamental alteration of what it means for two people to be married, then the institution of marriage is one that is, indeed, sacrosanct, and should not be re-examined. However, as this essay shows, marriage, as an institution, has evolved, and is continuing to evolve, which means that the institution can evolve in the direction of equality, without too much concern.
However for members of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender community that is exactly what they have faced for many years in their efforts to gain marriage equality in the United States. For years many have made efforts to change the laws which would allow same sex marriage to be acknowledged legally and allow these couples to reap all of the benefits owed to spouses, regardless of gender.
Since then, discussions on same sex marriages have yielded positive outcomes in the United States with several states legalizing same sex marriage. The state of Massachusetts is among the states that allow same sex marriage. Same Sex Marriage in Massachusetts Since the 1980s, the state of Massachusetts prohibits any discriminatory activities on individuals based on their sexual orientation in the public and the private employment as well as in other related opportunities.
As more gays and lesbians identify themselves publicly, they find that their attitudes and communication patterns often clash with people who do not understand the gay and lesbian co-cultures (Vander Zanden, 1993).
