This follows his tribesmen involving themselves in the battle to own the West with the US soldiers. Chief Joseph felt compelled to fight for their native land especially after the government discovered that the land was fertile and full of gold. The government decides to relocate the group of Nez Perce. Chief Joseph spearheaded the group of Nez Perce who were taken away from their lands against their will in 1877. Chief Joseph fudged and avoided his chasers for 90 days after travelling a very long errand until he eventually laid down his arm to General Nelson Miles following the total slaughter of his tribe from a five-day clash. After a long struggle, Chief Joseph decides to surrender and give a surrender speech. This surrender speech is extremely compelling, in spite of its shortness. With just a few number of words used, Chief Joseph was able to express the complete essence of a loss as likewise conveyed by the many Native peoples moved and dislocated from their abodes.
