Journal Week One The first week was about introduction to English composition. We learnt about the rules of writing and the way facts are organized before writing a composition. I was able to get important skills about writing at the end of the first week. Week Two This week was about the purpose and the audience when writing a composition. The lessons were about making a good purpose and writing about the purpose. The lesson on the purpose was important because it helps writers to avoid things that are not in the purpose. We also learnt about the audience of the story. The people who read stories and listen to stories are the audience. We learnt that good compositions are about things that the audience knows. Week Three During this week, I learnt about analysis. Analysis is looking for facts and issues that are presented in the composition. Analyses are important because they help us to understand the issues that the composition is writing about. This lesson was important because it helped me to get good skills of analyzing compositions and other writing in English. Week Four This week was important because I was tested on the skills of how to analyze something that I had read. It was an important week in the classroom. In this week I was able to write a paper from the article called “The Responsibility of Intellectuals, Redux.” I was interested in this article because I read it and understood what it was about. It was the first assignment of analyzing an article that was written in English language. I was an important test which helped me to sharpen my analytical skills. During this week, I gained skills of analysis and summary. I was able to read articles written in English and then summarize them in my own words. It was an important task that helped my process of learning, reading, and writing. Week Five This week was important because I was taught about ethos, logos, and pathos. I learnt about how to analyze meanings by looking at the way the writers of English articles use ethos, logos and pathos to create meaning. By reading some English articles, I was able to know how the ethos, logos, and pathos had been used in many articles. I have also learned how to use ethos, logos, and pathos when I am writing English articles. Ethos are the symbols which writers use when they want to explain something in their writing. Pathos are the things that writers use to convince the readers. Pathos use emotions to make meaning out of the various issues that writers use in their writings and articles. Many times, the use of these ethos and logos are brought about through articles and stories. I also learnt about logos. Logos are used when writers want to use facts and logic in in their articles and other writings. These week helped me to understand the way different writers use different methods for making meaning from various sources. I can also use ethos, logos and pathos to write stories and make meaning from them. Week Six During this week, I was able to learn about poetry. We learnt about poems and the way of reading and writing poems. We were taught the way the language used in poetry is different from the language that is used in other forms of writing. Usually, the writing process is important because it helps people to understand the use of language very well. I was able to write some poems and to read others. I was also able to analyze some poems that are generally brought within the element of writing. Week Seven During this week I was able to try and write about the things that I was taught in class. It was a week that helped me to practice my new skills. Week Eight This week was important because it helped me to understand poetry and the styles used in writing of poems. I was able to read about tone by looking at the words that were used in writing of the poem. I have developed the skills of writing about the things used in poems in ways that are creative and which respond to the challenges of everyday life. Week Nine During this week I was now able to practice the writing of poetry because I was taught about the rules. One of the poems that we were taught about was “Here in Berkely: Reasons to Survive in November,” written by Tony Hoagland. I found this poem interesting because it contained many elements of style. I was also taught about theme and how to find the theme in a poem. Week Ten During this week, we were able to learn a lot about synthesis essay. It was an important lesson because it helped me to acquire the skills of synthesis and to apply these skills in various issues that were concerned with matters of general interest. I was taught how to organize a synthesis so that it brings out many issues that are related to poems. Week Eleven During this week I was taught how to organize essays and compositions. Some of the things that we were taught about were important in the organization of writing skills of compositions and essays. The lesson helped me to get good skills of synthesis of essays that are written by different writers. Week Twelve This week was important because we learnt about how to apply the skills of synthesis to develop meaning from written articles. It was a week that was used to test my ability to write good synthesis articles after reading another article. Week Thirteen During this week I was introduced to an article that was written about the United States economy. I read the article very carefully and got the main points, which helped me to write my own synthesis. I was able to write a good synthesis because I read the facts about the United States economy, which were in the essay. Week Fourteen This week was important because it introduced me to different styles of writing. It was a week that helped to increase my writing skills, and the skills of writing synthesis articles. Week Fifteen This week was important because I wrote an essay about literacy. I was able to get the main points that were concerned about the many issues, which affected my learning. The literacy issue was about the way learning about literacy had affected my personal life. I was able to write about the many benefits I had gained from English literacy. Some of these included the ability to write good analyses and the ability to synthesize other articles that had been written by different authors. It was a summary of what I had been taught since the first week. I think that the composition and English literacy classes helped me to gain more vocabulary and to write good sentences. It also helped me to improve my communication skills. Read More
