His friends and he get down to discussing all their fantasies and their wishes which they always wanted to implement and put down on paper but could not because of the prevailing circumstances in their lives at the time. Lowes thus begins to act on an impulse and listens to his thoughts because he does not find the idea of his wife expecting him to work too hard very appealing. The time setting is the 1920s in America, when most people already living on the lines of poverty found it very hard to get proper tenured jobs and earn for their families; moreover, most workers at the time were used to meeting in the evenings to spend whatever money they had managed to make, on alcohol and games like bridge and rummy.

Aiken describes Lowes’ character drawn to temptation and his very nature being very regretful. He writes that Lowes pilfered a knife at a drugstore and was arrested leading to a separation from his wife and his child thus ending up in jail with no family to look out for and thus a ruined life. The manner in which the author has portrayed the story, makes the reader question whether or not the crime that Lowes committed was done in a deliberate manner for the thrill of it, because as his character has been described, he does not tend to pay much attention to the consequences that he has to face.

Lowes comes off as a character that one would feel pity for, however, then looking at it from another point of view, it was he that inflicted whatever situation that he was caught up in life upon himself and thus there is no one to blame for his actions but himself. Aiken has depicted Lowes to have a very logical frame of mind within the story; however, the story has too many situations of him getting drunk; and being intoxicated by alcohol did lead Lowes’ mind to become fuzzy and difficult for himself to understand his own actions.

The impulse that his character felt in committing the actions that he did was a result of the suppression of his emotions that he had been feeling for a considerable amount of time. He felt that as a man, he was not given enough leverage to do what he wanted to and the pressure of family life got to him in a negative manner where he felt that his wife always expected things of him. He has been depicted as a ‘loser’ in life, someone without an aim or a goal to achieve, even with respect to his wife and his child and thus, he looks at himself in a defeated manner, as if he has nothing to live for and thus probably committed his ‘impulsive’ actions in order to feel something different happening in his life for a change.

He attempts to escape from the monotonous reality that he has been living in; however, he does not seem to have the ambition to pull his socks up and do something about his situation by himself, thus turning towards committing acts that may be deemed as being self destructive, in order to seek some solace. Nonetheless, all of this ultimately ends him up in more trouble than happiness. The writer however has given a different picture of what Lowes believes himself to be as a man; he writes that Lowes looks at himself as a good natured man with a kind heart and morals in life.
