So Joe asks Shane to join his family and stay back for few days as the weather is bad. Shane get accustomed with the family very well and become friendly to them. Joe even confesses to Sharon that he is the safest person to be with the family. One day when Shane helped Joe on farm in stumping a tree, Joe realizes that they can be a good team and work together on the farm. So he asks Shane to join his farm as farmhand. Even though Shane hesitates to the offer initially, later he agrees to work with Joe.

Shane soon joins Joe’s farm as a farm hand and get closely in connection with Joe’s family. He soon makes a place in the heart of starrett family and idealizes Joe’s for his manliness and heroic traits. Shane stays with Joe and works for him and is accepted by his family, especially by his son Bob. Joe explains Shane about the problems he is facing in his farm and trouble from Baron Fletcher. During his stay with Joe, he develops a strong bond with his family and to his wife Marian. Shane admires Joe and wants to do everything to prove his loyalty and friendship to Joe. Hence he plans to defend Joe against the baron Fletcher. So he stays back with Joe and also he does so because he wants to live as a farmer and wants to forget his harsh past. Being close to family he cannot neglect the torture of Fletcher on Joe and wants to help him to get back his land. So Shane decided his ability as a gunslinger to fight down Fletcher and protect his farmland.

Shane had a very mysterious past and he wants to forget it by settling down in Johnson County. He above all likes Joe and his family and wants to help them in all way he can. Shane stays back with Joe as he feels bad for the suffering undergone by Joe at the hands of Fletcher. Shane fined Joe to be a good man and moreover he gets close with this son Bob. Joe also invited Shane to join him seeing his strength an ability to defend Fletcher. Shane interacts well with the family and also Joe likes his work at farm.

Joe and his family’s respect and admiration for Shane increases as he defends Joe from Fletcher’s men.
