?An Analysis of Flannery O’Connor Part One: The choice of the words in the quote seemed to have been carefully chosen. The words I have a religious theme behind them, as the quote has a religious theme behind it. The quote is something that meant something to the author of the quote. What that something was is no matter how terrible life is there is always light at the end of the tunnel. When someone sees the light at the end of the tunnel that someone will be happy. The word choice, and the structure of the quote give the quote down, and meaning. When someone reads the quote that someone would give a different meaning if there were other words selected for the quote. Even if the words meant something similar to the words already in the quote, the interpretation of the quote would be entirely different. The quote means that there is light, and that time will stand still in the light. When someone dies that someone sees only light, peacefulness, and happiness, the quote has profane time because time on earth is priceless, and time in heaven will be endless. Having time on earth with one’s family gives one a sense of belonging and togetherness. One will take a family snapshot to keep memories alive, and remember those loved ones who have passed away. When life on earth is done all one, has been the memories of a loved one, and often those memories are captured when time freezes in a family snapshot. Family snapshots are one of the most important things that a person can have, these things help to keep the memory alive and are especially important when a loved one dies. Loved ones who die will see the light, which is what the sunlight, or flash represents in the quote. The flash, and time standing still are symbols as if they are symbols of the afterlife. So, whenever a person takes a snapshot to capture one moment in time, the person should realize this may be it, this may be the last snapshot taken. Part Two: “The doctor’s waiting room” (86) was small in size, and Mrs. Turpin could not be there were so many people in the waiting room. Mrs. Turpin wanted Claude to sit down so she said “sit in that chair” (86). When Claude sat down this is Turpin continued to look around the room. Her eyes became focused on an elderly gentleman sitting in a chair near Claude. “The lean stringy old fellow with a rusty hand on each mean was pretending to be asleep” (86). Claude tried to get up and allow Mrs. Turpin to sit down. Mrs. Turpin said to Claude “you know you are not supposed to be standing on that leg” (86). Claude let everyone in the waiting room know what was wrong with his life, and why he was not supposed to be standing on his leg. With nowhere to sit one of the other women sitting in the waiting room who was dressed just like Mrs. Turpin suggested that the little boy in the waiting room cannot, and allow Mrs. Turpin to sit down “but the child did not stir” (86). Mrs. Turpin decided she would need to wait until someone was called into the doctor’s office before she would be able to sit. The waiting room was small, and “hardly bigger than the garage” (86). There were not too many moments that passed by before the “door opened and a nurse” (86) called the next patient in. Mrs. Turpin, and the woman who dressed like Mrs. Turpin was having a conversation. Next to the woman “was a fat girl of 18 or 19" (87). The fat girl was well-dressed women’s daughter. The child’s mother sat next to him, she was dirty. Mrs. Turpin often entertains herself at night with thoughts of how blessed her was that she was who she is. Sometimes, “Mrs. Turpin occupied herself at night naming classes of people” (88). The classes of people were below her, with her, and above her. The child’s mother was definitely below Mrs. Turpin. Mrs. Turpin, and the well-dressed woman were having a conversation in the doctor’s office. The conversation was about anything that occupied either woman’s mind. Oftentimes the low class woman would join in the conversation. Mrs. Turpin would cut the lower-class woman short in her conversation. “The doctor slammed her book shut” (88). The daughter was annoyed at how Mrs. Turpin was cutting the lower-class woman short. Mrs. Turpin, and the well-dressed woman continued their conversation. The lower-class woman continued to interrupt the conversation with her thoughts. Mrs. Turpin, and the well-dressed woman were talking about the black people and how the black people should all go back to Africa. The lower-class woman jumped into the conversation and said she was glad she was not black. Mrs. Turpin said she was glad that there were enough of them around the pick her cotton this year. There are some things that the white trash woman did not want in life one of them were “hogs. They are nasty” (89). Mrs. Turpin took offense to the white trash woman, because Ms. Turpin’s hogs were not nasty and dirty like she was. The daughter becomes annoyed at Mrs. Turpin’s coldness, and rudeness toward the low class woman. The book the ugly woman was reading was thrown at Mrs. Turpin, and “the girl’s fingers sink like clamps into Mrs. Turpin” skin (92). The girl called Mrs. Turpin’s in old warthog from hell. As the day continued Mrs. Turpin was confused, as she did not know why the young girl called her in an old warthog from hell. Certainly the young girl did not think that to was an old warthog from hell, how could she be? She was not a low class woman like the child’s mother, and grandmother. When Claude and Mrs. Turpin arrived home later that day, they first took a nap then Claude when after the help. Mrs. Turpin made the help someone water, and brought the water out to the truck for the help. Mrs. Turpin was hosing down the hogs, and keeping the hog cage clean when Claude left to take the help home. Only after Claude left and Mrs. Turpin saw Claude’s trucks on the highway through the trees beyond the hog cage to Mrs. Turpin begin to wonder why God had sent her a message like the one he sent earlier that day in the doctor’s office. Certainly God did not think Ms. Turpin was an old warthog when he blessed her with so much. Then out of nowhere Mrs. Turpin was given the answer too why God-had centers that message earlier that day. Mrs. Turpin saw a light and “a vast horde of souls were rumbling toward heaven” (97). In among the hordes of souls were all the people below her going first into heaven. These people were clean, and had nice clothes on, and they looked like her. This revelation relates to the quote because the quote symbolizes that everything will be the same in heaven. There will be no classes. There will be no white trash, middle-class, and rich people in heaven. Everyone will be the same, everyone will be one race, and everyone will be happy. So Mrs. Turpin in the story was revealed that she really is no different from the white trash woman who sat in the doctor’s office with her, or the ugly girl with the acne all over her face, because, everyone will be the same, once they go to heaven.
