The Happiest Day in My Life I belong to a middle family and hence cannot claim many ‘so happy’ days in life. Still, I too have such times in life when I reached the zenith of exhilaration and felt myself at the top of the world. It was the year of 1999 and I was seriously preparing for my matriculation examination. My quarterly and mid-term examinations clearly predicted an imminent failure and hence, well before the final examination, my teachers, parents and even my close associates wrote the verdict that I would fail in the final examination and the greatest blow would be in mathematics.
Adding to my woes, my two classmates lived in my neighborhood whose mothers made it a routine to pester my mother enquiring about my exam preparation and marks. This was the picture of the battlefield before that miracle took place. Though I was well below mediocre in studies and, opposite to the conventional view, poor in extracurricular activities too, I had that burning desire in my belly to prove my mettle in studies. I made a secret plan to study as hard as possible during the days of the final exam.
Though I found the exam quite easy, I kept it a secret as I was not sure about the outcome. On the day the final result was to come out, I kept a neutral countenance hiding my anxiety. Finally, when I checked the result, I was really amazed to see the very high score I got that was even beyond my imagination. In elation, I verified the result thrice and then declared it to my family. Sooner, I got one more happy news that my two ‘threats’ in the neighborhood had scored less than I for the first time in their life.
My joy knew no boundaries and I found myself start believing in luck and fate; two things I always found baseless. I immediately bought a box of sweets and distributed it among my family members and neighbors. I could read surprise in the face of all who heard the news. Then it was time to visit my teachers at school. For the first time in my school life, I found those faces friendly and warm with broad smiles. I spent the evening with friends partying and dancing, and later went to bed with a heart full of mixed emotions of happiness, gratitude and pride.
I have to admit that I had never felt such a great degree of happiness before.
