I have enclosed my resume for your consideration. As demonstrated by my attached resume, I recently graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering from Victoria University, and I am certain that the skills and knowledge I acquired at the university make me the perfect candidate for the role of graduate engineer. I am interested in the job due to my passion for highway design as well as traffic engineering. During my course, I gained various skills such as project management, AutoCAD, and Surveying which offer me a foundation to build a career as a Civil Engineer. I am certain that I would bring high expertise to the company and help Wagners improve their reputation as Australia’s engineering company. This would be augmented by my enthusiasm and passion for civil engineering, and I am certain my contribution will immediately impact the organisation. Thank you for your consideration as well as time. I look forward to hearing from you. Yours sincerely, [Name]   Two Star Responses Question One: Tell us about the time when you managed to lead on a difficult task?” Response Situation Some years ago while working as a volunteer at a local not-for-profit organisation that provide caregiver support programs, the coordinator informed us during a brief meeting that he has been receiving a lot of negative reviews regarding our services. He suggested that we create a working group that would examine the situation and present practical improvements. Task Since I was searching for an opportunity to demonstrate that I could take a leadership role and bear more responsibility and as an individual that enjoys working in a team, I volunteered to lead the team tasked with examining the situation. The coordinator reluctantly made me the leader of the working group, which placed me in a leadership position of a team that had five members. The task given to the team was coming up with a practical solution. Action For the next four weeks, we examined all the reports from the clients and established that most of the negative reviews were because of the lengthy wait times that customers had to endure before getting the service. Given that we were tasked to find a solution that would help limit the amount of time that the customers wait in order to get the services, I lead brainstorming sessions.  After some sessions, we decided to change the procedure used to deliver service. Result When my suggestion was implemented, the organisation managed to concentrate primarily on certain age groups. In so doing, they started working more efficiently and faster; thus, the wait times reduced by 20 per cent. I managed to lead five people and come up with a sustainable solution that generated a positive outcome and got rid of the problem. Question Two: In your resume, you have indicated leadership as a key skill. Kindly illustrate where you utilised your leadership abilities. Response Situation: in the last year of study at Victoria University, I was selected as the leader of Civil Engineering student association. My duties included advertising workshops and seminars to the civil engineering students, evaluating all the programs, and introducing the speakers. However, lack of adequate facilities to hold the workshops and various meetings presented hindrance to the attendance of the students. Besides that, accessibility of entertainment facilities in the school diverted the students’ attention from these meetings. Task: Given that the attendance of the civil engineering students at these meetings had reduced tremendously because of lack of facilities and addiction to social media sites, I was tasked to execute programs with the aim of addressing the professional development of civil engineering students and ensuring that the attendance increased by 40%. Action: For this reason, I assembled some students to help me with speaker selection and program design. I created an online survey to establish the professional ideas and interests of the students with the aim of choosing appropriate speakers as well as topics. Together with my team, we made sure that many students participate in the survey. Then we and then we selected some students randomly a focus group interview. The survey and focus group interviews enabled me to identify why students had stopped attending the workshops and meetings which were crucial for their professional development. I sought the help of my team to raise awareness regarding the significance of students attending such meetings and how it is connected to academic achievement. Result: The findings from surveys and interviews enabled me to select speakers and topics that would help improve attendance. Through my leadership, attendance grew by 80 per cent after two months. After explaining to the students the significance of these meetings to their professional development, the number of attendance started increasing. Reflection My recent interview at Wagner Industrial Services Pty Ltd allowed me to learn through trial and error and I gained some tips for future interviews. I learned that it is imperative to carry out a research on the job opportunity and the employer since, without a solid knowledge foundation, failure is more probable. Although I understood the job requirements, I did not know the employer or the background of the people that interviewed me. I realised that it is imperative to scout the website of the employer and review the common interview questions. I also noted that preparing responses to interview questions is crucial for a successful interview. Before the interview, I made sure I dress in a way that fits the organisation as well as its culture. I ensured that I dress for success by exhibiting a professional appearance and arriving on Time. During the interview, I was not just relaxed, but ready for the Interview. Before the interview date, I made sure that I packed up additional copies of my resume and also samples of my works and projects. I had a prior knowledge that making a good impression was a cardinal interview rule; therefore, I offered warm greetings to the interviewers and remained polite throughout the process. Besides that, I smiled and made eye contact with my interviewers to demonstrate my confidence. In addition, I remained authentic, brief, positive, attentive, self-assured, and honest throughout the interview process. Generally, I feel that my interview was successful and I felt comfortable answering all the questions. Certainly the mock interview has enabled me in numerous ways; for instance, I have learned that during a job interview, it is imperative to remain relaxed and calm considering that body language demonstrates the interviewer confidence on answering the questions. Next time I go to a job interview, I will make sure that I prepare myself properly so as to exude confidence. In so doing, I would be able to display my enthusiasm and vigour for the company. I have also learned that easiest way of highlighting my skills is by making a list of the job requirements and matching them to my experience. I also noted that listening to the whole question before answering it and paying attention is crucial and can help a person succeed in the interview. Read More
