In the aforementioned, the concerns were on the slabs of the building, touching on the floor on the foundation and subsequent in tall buildings. It went further to touch on the wall, where it explained the inner and outer walls of the building, load bearing and non-load bearing, as well as roof, doors and windows. All this was done in consideration of the dimensions of the building, and the materials used in its construction. On the other hand, the second building was dealt with during the tutorial session, where the requirements made by the client were put into consideration. Reflection
Building and control, as a subject, has been of much help to me as an individual and as a potential professional as it has offered and delivered to me vital information on construction and construction world pertaining to houses and buildings. As such, it has provided me with a clerk set of skill and knowledge on the standards put in place to govern building and construction work. The above remains crucial in the industry as regulators since they specify the guidelines and go ahead to ensure that constructed buildings are completed securely thanks to the building code. In the course of this subject and semester, two tasks were assigned to us, and both at different times, with one covering the lecture sessions, while the second occupied the tutorial sessions. The fundamentals of the lecture sessions entailed practise through recognition of site plans, streets, car parks and houses. In addition, it required the participants in the subject to engage in drawing plans, roofs, windows dimensions and door dimensions, where all these assisted in acquisition of skills on elevation and sections, as well as structural requirements of each building and the construction quality. The above also assisted in familiarising and practising with actual dimensions and elevations involved in the construction of standard houses and their suitable dimensions, especially in the case of windows and doors since they had to meet the requirements of the basic house. Because of participating in the lecture session, it is evident that it assisted greatly in the acquisition of more knowledge on drawings, as well as how to indulge in drawing detailed plans for buildings accompanied by the information that has to be put in the plans. This means that the key issue besides familiarizing with the drawings, we learnt how to read plans and incorporate the information in our own drawings.
On the other hand, there was the tutorial lesson, in which we had to work with a real client in coming up with a building tailored to meet his or her own specification and to the level of detail as desired by the client in questions. As such, we had a client by the name Eugenia Wolfe, and we had to cater to her every need in terms of build quality and construction work, where we did as she asked. With that, the first goal was to identify the construction site so that we could familiarize ourselves with the kind of area she had in mind for her construction work. From here on, the main work commenced with considerations for the drawing of the house’s plans of both the first and second floors. So we drew the plans as instructed, and in the second phase, I drew the bedrooms, living room, kitchen, and bathrooms as dictated by the overall plan of the house making them suitable according to their locations. All the above was in consideration of the sun due to its critical role in lighting the house during the day, where the best had to made out of it, ensuring that each room was in a position to be lit, but the most important areas received more light. The third phase in drawing the plans was the roof, where considerations were made on the angles and the height of the roof. Then I drew the doors and windows and provided the dimensional details of each door and windows. The final concept was to draw the shadows of the house, which as per the requirements of the client was the house’s shadow at 0900, 1200 and 1500hrs on the 22nd of September.
Conclusion
Altogether, the overall role of the subject was to ensure that the students who participated in learning acquired relevant skills in drawing, planning and comprehending the implications of structural integrity and the dimensions of the building. As such, the students had to learn what makes a secure house or building according to the nature of the building and the surroundings, especially the soil and its conditions, as well as kits suitability in the building to be constructed, as well as its implication on long term buildings. Similarly, the subject offered the students an opportunity to learn the industry’s code of work in terms of regulation in construction, especially when it came to the types of walls and the expected strength handled by each type of building material. Similarly, the subject came in handy in offering the students a chance to grasp basic concepts of drawing plans and putting in all the required details of each plan, and considering the construction material. In addition, this type of subject was crucial in that the building code and standards imparted on the students pertained to a specific area, Australia, making it relevant to the country of practice. The final part of the was the practice involving drawing plans, where there were practical skills involving the need to apply their knowledge and skills to specific situations as was the case with drawing plans. Similarly, the requirement to work with clients and cater to every specification was crucial to honing their skills and improving their confidence since it acted as an evaluative feature. The ability to plan was vital, especially in consideration of the sun and meeting the client’s need was proof of success in the learning process. All the above make the subject crucial for all aspiring to venture into the construction industry due to its implications in content delivery.
