Mr. Harris did not face any challenge difficult for him to solve as he had a perfect way of solving them. On a certain fateful day, Mr. Harris attended an interview in a certain engineering company. Although his presentation and answers asked were perfect, Mr. Harris found himself losing the job since the panel rejected him. With personality becoming essential part of an individual, the case of Mr. Harris is a common phenomenon in day-today experiences. It is a fact that knowledge, skills, and on-job experience is a perfect tool for every individual however, it is difficult to underestimate individual’s personality. In the past few years, people used to ignore the complex aspects of an individual and emphasized on the importance of certificates and academic achievements of an individual. With revolutions in the job markets, this idea continues to shift in a manner that sees people resorting to counseling for them to improve their qualities. The HE course played an important role in enabling me gain insights and further experience series of changes and an understanding of the significance of personality development. The HE course has made me understand that personality development is not an overnight task. In essence, personality development requires lots of time and efforts to groom and shape. Additionally, personality development is the outcome of so many factors such as will-power, confidence, concentration, memory, and smile, humor, just to name a few. The effort put in has coupled with the acquired knowledge has certainly paid rich bonus and at the same time helped me in identifying my lacuna. SWOT Analysis Strength: Since childhood, I have always believed in the old saying that knowledge is power. This has always fascinated me to seek more knowledge and thus raising my passion for it. Throughout my childhood, I remained a keen observer and got interested in little things that matter in life without realizing that it would later on be a source of fuelling my career. Getting interested in small things such as observing bubbles in water is the basis of my desire to pursue mechanical engineering as career. I always believe that every human kind has some unparalleled level of potentials. Have realized this helped me take serious considerations on advice from my peers, parents, and other elders through critical analysis and evaluation. My choice of mechanical engineering is based on my early passion and love of machines, not to forget my father’s sound advice that increased my passion for engineering. I always believe that engineering work is a dream fulfilled and a source of pleasure for me. My love for engineering is the main reason for my inclination towards the Y graph. I like doing any activity before me to perfection and guiding my peers and workmates. I have also developed good leadership skills. This can be illustrated from the fact that we won various sport competitions despite the fact that we did not have a numero uno team in a sports competition. Weakness: my greatest weakness is that I have a strong and sometimes very compulsive need to finish tasks quickly and remove them from “to do list”, sometimes this can compromise the quality of my work. This need to do things quickly is also something likely to cause me stress in the case of so many tasks. I also fail to have a sound grasp over time management because I finish my duties just in time. I also identify myself as having a problem of sleeping until late and end up being late for work. At time, I throw up a tantrum when I do not see people pursuing their work with the same fervor as I do. I fail to acknowledge that people have different levels of experience and passion for their duties, my tendency of expecting high quality results, as I do will therefore be unfair. Finally, According to Belbin's self-perception team role profile, my weakness falls under characteristics such as being over optimistic and being manipulative. Opportunities: My pleasure is that I was able to take up a course that is in line with my own interests and passion. Since my dad also pursued engineering, seeing him dispense his duties is a great source of inspiration. His idea that we open up an engineering consulting firm did compel me to strive even harder to get good grades. Having acquired some good leadership skills, a step further will help us manage things accordingly. My father’s friends also have a good and vast experience in different engineering fields and will be a great source of advice. It is also fascinating to realize that most of those friends have a good number of engineering firms operating at international level. I have this hope of setting up a firm that will operate internationally. Threats: Small enterprises always face some challenges before venturing into the market. Existing enterprises have already occupied a greater share of the market, they are stable, their brand is well known and already stable in the market. Although my father and I are passionate about setting up an engineering plant, we acknowledge that we are short of experience, which is dangerous factor for any new enterprise. My weakness of also expecting people to work perfectly for high-level results is a factor that may underplay my quest to achieve some goals. Necessary Steps to Develop One’s Personality Now that I have a clear picture of what I need, knowing my strengths and weaknesses, I can go into the right path by taking various steps for developing my personality. The first step is “to develop a Personal Mission statement” (Covey, para.3). The Personality Development plan to be adopted is one such guideline or philosophy necessary for improving one’s personality. The following is a clear description of the steps I will take to ensure improved personality. (i) Need for knowledge and making learning scope more expansive: As mentioned earlier, knowledge is power and liberty. Education is an investment ensures a good return. Having knowledge from diverse fields will increase individual’s ability to deal with various aspects. (ii) The need for confidence: It is important for anyone to have confidence for proper articulation of ideas. The case of Mr. Harris is clear evidence that confidence built in an individual’s behavior is a very important tool. Nervousness and panic is a behavior that can convey a wrong message. For example, when goes to a bank manager to secure loan with nervousness, it is like sending a message of unscrupulous behavior to the bank manager. Confidence has helped many individuals to win various interviews and others to take responsibility of their mistakes by confidently acknowledging them. (iii) Time consciousness and punctuality: time management is a very important tool that every individual should possess. Being late in job or reporting late for meeting will most likely lead to dismal performance. Managing time by following a well-planned routine is a virtue that helps an individual have a systematic and organized manner of work. (iv) Synergize leadership with teamwork: Leaders who set an example for their teams are the best in earning follower’s respect and trust. This simply means that portraying oneself only as a leader of the team without being involved in the actual work may not help the leader to gain confidence of the team members. Meanwhile getting too informal with the teammates may greatly affect the conviction with team members follow you. A leader should be approachable by team members and appreciate ideas from juniors. He should also involve in fieldwork with the team so that their relationship is cemented. “If the situational environment is such that the emotional attachment between the leader and followers is weak, there is tendency for individuals engaging in activities likely to affect the team negatively (White & Lean, pp.768). (v) Developing a Positive Outlook. Developing a positive attitude can help change a certain difficult situation to win-win situation. Optimistic mind will perceive situation deemed difficult as good opportunities for them to venture into and do their best. (vi) Be your own competitor: Developing an idea where one is one’s competitor is the best option for excellence. Most people have a trajectory that escalates up to a certain level before falling down tremendously. To sustain the growth, one needs to improve one’s capabilities in order to adjust to the ever-changing environment. Improvement makes one capable of handling new and challenging situations. (vii) Never compromise on Ethics and involve in Social Service: This is one area overlooked by most individuals in the past. However, in the current world, ethics is increasingly becoming a serious business too as indicated by the voluminous literature available on it (Weber & McGivern, pp.162). Ethical behavior means treating other individuals with respect and honor. What we get is what we give and so social service should be an integral part of our activities. In addition to mental satisfaction, these activities empower us with practical knowledge. My Past, Present, and Future In my past live, I have managed to live a balanced life with a great dedication towards my education. I have not relented in my quest for taking part in co-curricular activities and this participation has only improved my experience. My father’s encouragement of participation in social service is another factor of great importance. In the past I was reluctant in pursuing a good academic course due to some financial constraints. Nevertheless, with progress and maturity, the idea of the importance of an engineering course as a passion dawned to me. I adopted the Socratic Method in my education and meticulously scrutinized sophisticated details before coming to a conclusion. This was instrumental in inculcating the virtue of patience in me. My perception of the future is a stable one owing to the reliable people ready to support me at all times. I certainly expect to further my education for better chance to enrich my career as a mechanical engineer. I would like to develop my personality by taking proactive plans, which enhance personality and learn more from the university. After my days in the University, it is my wish to secure an internship to help me get rich industrial experience that will set the basis for developing my own personal business. I certainly look forward to create a positive impact not only in my life but also in the lives of other people around me. I have had a great passion for Social service and this has created a great impact in my life to an extent that I hate seeing people suffering. Conclusion The University sessions have been a revelation for not only me but also other students. These sessions have made me pay attention to the finer aspects of one’s personality, which includes hygiene, gait, and communication skills. For the past few decades, most parents did not put more emphasis on the personality of their children. Instead, they emphasized more on physical appearance and expertise in job (Anandrahi, para.4). However, the situation is very different these days. Parents nowadays encourage their children to participate in activities that are perceived to improve their personalities. I have been blessed to be raised in a family, which has instilled in me the core ideas of a good personality. The educational institutes have also enhanced me further and added new dimensions to how to inculcate new habits that improve personality. Finally, the sessions in the University have made me proactive and I do seek opinion of others about my personality with the aim of improving it even further. It has helped me grow in stature and understand the importance of confidence. I am certainly inching towards development and I do feel that I have done enough efforts to fill up some of the voids. I look forward to excelling even further to enable me fulfill my dreams.
