Fire being a risk in all parts of the University, its costs include the threat to the people's life/ or wellbeing, property loss, and severe normal business disruptions. Safety in fire includes procedures to avert and mitigate substantial damages in the occurrence of fire through timely discovery, reducing spread via evacuation, migration measures, and ways of combating. Alleviation procedures must comply with university laws. This strategy expands on the University’s general health, safety, and environmental protection policy.

Its key point is the establishment of a secure fire plan that can safeguard the health of human beings and guarantee that buildings are safe (Dunn, 2010).The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 came into force in October 2006, replacing/consolidating a large number of existing fire safety-related pieces of legislation. This Order places a greater focus on risk assessment, fire prevention, and an overall reduction of risk by placing duties on the ‘responsible person’ (the employer) in order to achieve legislative compliance.

Building summaryThe students’ center will be constructed on the existing University campus and will include the following facilities; lecture halls, dining services, library facilities, social spaces, IT facilities, and offices. The building will comprise ground, first and second floors. The uppermost occupied floor (level 2) measures 8m on top of the ground floor level, the rooftop plant level will be 11.5m and the overall building size will be 71m by 52m and 2140m2 path areas. Universal building sections are to be linked by an open atrium void that rises from the ground floor to level 2.

Elevations for the building are currently being developed; however, the boundary distances are as follows: North Elevation – Site Boundary approximately 40m, South Elevation – Centre of the main road approximately 40m and East Elevation – Economics building located approximately 8m away at the closest point. The foremost floor and the subsequent floor of the Student center will be linked to the nearby Arts Building by a bridge link since the existing Arts Building does not currently have lift access to the upper floor levels (Bernard J.

Klaene, 2008).
