BEng Mechanical Engineering Part A BEng Mechanical Engineering is irrefutably a multifaceted foundation course based on many avenues, which a graduate might intend to pursue as per his or her strengths in regards to scientific knowhow (Whatuni.com, 2015). These avenues range embrace one upon graduation becoming a consultant, researchers, managers or acting in the technical bench, which are essential roles especially in industrial sector (Whatuni.com, 2015). However, in assuming these capacities one ought to have adequate hands on experience besides theoretical knowledge. Since, the measure of an individual’s acumen is his or her ability to utilize the scientific knowledge he or she has to implement changes. Hence, boost the firm’s economic status and generally the state. An accomplished expert in this field his or her knowhow in most cases is applicable in the factories as well as garages. Since, in these areas is where designing, development as well as production of varied machines normally occur (Whatuni.com, 2015). In most cases, Engineers’ roles encompass utilizing scientific knowhow with the intention to make humanity’s life more enjoyable. Hence, end up utilizing varied prototypes and pilot plants intended to ensure that ideas materialize to more accomplished and advanced machines that the existing ones (The University of Nottingham, n.d). For instance, this is quite evident with coming up with machines and cars that will ensure effective production of quality products in any given sector and high speeds in the latter. Hence, cut on cost which is the core goal a factory’s internal management who measure their efficiency with the aid of variances (The University of Nottingham, n.d). My interest in this course is to acquire adequate knowhow coupled with experience that will enable me realize the goal of fabricating a car. Since, my degree from Nottingham University besides equipped with interpersonal and managerial acumen, I will have specialized in automotive (The University of Nottingham, n.d). Consequently, this will be an advantage to me in realizing my dreams based on the quality of education the university normally equips its students with for almost 3 years. However, in building my car the focus will not only be to come up with an ordinary product like any other in the market or an imitation but that has varied specific advancements. This is because of the automotive field’s present competition whereby to remain at the top it is only by constant innovation. Part B Similar to University of Nottingham, there are other varied as well as numerous institutions that normally equip students with the same knowhow globally intending to specialize in Mechanical Engineering. One of these institutions is Liverpool John Moores University (Ljmu), which also similar to University of Nottingham each student ought to part with £9,000 mainly for fee (The University of Nottingham, n.d). The other similarity among these two universities’ BEng Mechanical Engineering are professionally-accredited by study groups for any graduate to be recognized as a Chartered Engineer. The study groups in this case normally regulate and ensure the offered courses usually align with the current as well as future demand in the market required of any graduating Engineer. Hence, ensure once in their respective fields are capable of delivering as necessitated besides being innovative. However, they have significant differences in the manner they offer their respective courses whereby in Ljmu since one has enrolled to undertake varied modules though the bulkiness eases as a person is in the 4th year. For instance, the gradual is evident whereby in the 4th year a sandwich student has only four modules, which are compulsory. In the 3rd year, the institution insists on industrial experience. The institution has maintained close links with worldwide reputable industrial players in their respective fields, for instance, BMW, Rolls-Royce as well as Shell besides others due to the way the course contents is tailored par the industrial needs. Conversely, The University of Nottingham does not have extremely varying modules throughout the years modules are taught though they are less in the 3rd year contrary to Ljmu. In addition, Ljmu in its quest of ensuring it meets client’s demands with well-seasoned workforce, has embarked on equipping students with effective study skills. University of Nottingham also avails more option modules with more subjects in the starting year, which is probably to prepare the students what to expect in the following years. I have preferred relaying James Ren’s account and how he has progressed to date after joining Ljmu 2004. In 2010, he become a professor and has been in the institution to date whereby he has shown interest in material researches, which is also one of his topics that he lectures in the institution besides manufacturing. Hence, making him a renowned scholar in the field due to remarkable contributions so far his researches shade light in varied fields. This is evident with the 2011 project where he acted as a director in quest to unveil behavior of molded plastics. Due to his accomplished expertise, he has participated in over 50 publication, which some of them include, Books: Analysis of Indentation Size Effect of Vickers Hardness Tests of Steels, Advanced Materials Research (2013) Creep behaviours of single crystal ceramics (1996) Journal articles: Effect of rare earth oxides on the morphology of carbides in metal of high chromium cast iron. Journal of Rare Earths (2011) Optimization on mechanical properties of Fe7xCrxC3 carbides by first-principles investigation (2013) Part C The initial module, which students ought to acquaint themselves with is “Mechanical Engineering Design.” Mainly, this unit usually equips one with basic decisions in regards to design as well as commonly utilized standards that characterize varied components in the industry (Marghitu, 2001). Due to the insistence of today’s design and emergent applications in the automotive sector the unit’s focus is on fundamentals, which students will be encountering while tackling other units. Hence, provide both instructors and students with the necessary analytical knowhow essential to any design work (Marghitu, 2001). Since, this is what will encompass their lives once they manage to undertake respective courses fully coupled with desire to work and apply what one has so far studied. The primary discrepancy between automatic and manual gears lies on their extent of performance. In the case of a manual gear, the driver normally chooses from the combinations varied gears based on the condition he or she might be travelling. This is quite different in when it comes to automatic, which usually utilizes hydraulic system in the quest to engage the right gear. Therefore, this implies respective connections evident amid crank and input shafts of these two gear systems are completely different because manual gear utilizes dry clutch. Conversely, automatic relies on hydraulic torque converter (Moeller, 2002, p. 63). In addition, manual comprises of a horizontal plate facing flywheel fixed on one end of the crankshaft whereby once engaged both the plate and flywheel clink tightly together with the aid of springs (Moeller, 2002). On disengaging, separation of both flat and flywheel occurs thus breaking the earlier connection. Conversely, automatic normally comprises of two components whose appearance are similar to that of fans (impeller) linked to the crankshaft (turbine) linked to the transmission input shaft (Moeller, 2002, p. 63). The mechanism in this type of gear does not entail the driver to choose from the numerous combinations, which gear to engage but an incompressible liquid does all this task. This is just by a command whereby currently there is no need of a clutch because numerous cars do not necessitate changing of gears (Moeller, 2002). Due to the self adjusting of the automatic gear, the driver does not need to tire oneself with the task of changing whenever he or she wants to accelerate or slow down (Moeller, 2002). Therefore, what one needs to do is only fixing one’s eyes on the road because there is no other task one does while driving. This is quite helpful especially when one is in a bumper-to-bumper situation for a person will not keep tiring oneself with clutch. Since there is no shifting up or down repeatedly over just few gears and even sometimes end up choosing the wrongs. Hence, causing emergencies in traffic due to instant stopping more so when moving slowly in a busy traffic. Due to this predicament, automatic gear’s intervention enables drivers to be more accurate such that they cannot end up stalling while moving due to miscalculation. Accuracy in this case improves performance in terms of heightened power, which is essential especially when intends to accelerate. Conversely, manual due to delays more so when one ends up not choosing the right combinations is hardly to keep up an automatic driver car. Besides automatic are easy to use and master especially to first time learners. Hence, making it easy to operate as well as ascertain whether there is anything not working appropriately. Besides lower initial cost and being lighter, manual gears have many gears contrary to the automatic ones. This is because the latter though claimed to relieve drivers from old mode of changing gears; it is quite heavy due to transmission and other varied systems that enhance its operations. Due to simplicity of the manual, it is easy to maintain compared to automatic ones because the latter encompasses constant checking coupled with costly maintenance. This is quite evident once the system seems to have a certain failure or malfunctions and entails mechanic’s attention. Manual have better control because the driver normally decides which gear to use based on the speed he or she intends to accelerate. Conversely, automatic ones normally end up attaining high speeds quickly, which with a prolonged use end up wasting engine’s power. Studies so far conducted contend manual’s consumption lies between 5 and 15% though in certain circumstances depending on the road. This is quite different in the case of automatic one because due to the ease in which one attains high acceleration entails increased fuel consumption. Additionally, studies so far conducted contend manuals exhibit a heightened performance. This is in terms of speeding as well as quarter mile times, which is contrary to automatics though this differs significantly across numerous vehicles. Hence, studies have not concretely settled to this fact due to varying divergences. References Marghitu, Dan B. 2001. Mechanical Engineers Handbook. San Diego, CA: Academic Press. Moeller, S.
