Introduction:
The essay gives a detailed discussion of the design process of a parents’ waiting room and bicycle storage in a school. The priorities of different criteria in construction are discussed by a binary dominance matrix. The outline of different thought processes used to reach the final design is mentioned. Health and Safety issues during the construction and operation of the building are discussed. The essay includes a rough estimate of cost and also a rough sketch of the plan of the building.

Thought Process:
The following points were considered before reaching the final design.
1. The area available for construction
2. The number of students enrolled in the school (supposed to be 800)
3. Building materials used in other buildings of the school
4. The entrance and other topographical features of the school grounds
5. Distance from the classrooms
6. The required capacity
7. The number of registered students who come to school riding the bicycle (supposed to be 150)
8. The funds allocated for construction
9. Aesthetics of other buildings in the school
10. Design of bicycle stands observed in different schools
11. Easy access to the entrance for bicycle stand i.e. gate 2
12. Number of parents visiting at a time (supposed to be maximum of 20)
13. Easy approach to the steps leading to the offices and other buildings in school
14. A partition for receptionist is provided
15. Two leaf door suggested as the main entrance of the waiting area
16. Toilets are provided for ladies and gents to facilitate the waiting parents
17. Bracket for water dispenser is provided to facilitate the waiting parents
18. 6 windows are provided to make the building airy
19. Frame Structure allowing further adjustments at later stages of operation of the building
20. RCC structure for the bicycle storage to increase sustainability
21. Provision of lock railing in the middle of the bicycle storage to allow the students to lock the bikes
Health and Safety:
Health and Safety aspects are to be considered both during the operation as well as the construction of a building.
Health & Safety during Construction:
Health and Safety Executive (2010a: 11; 2010b: 19) discusses the welfare facilities and safety during construction:
1. There should be proper restrooms and sanitation facilities at the site
2. The tools and the equipments should be ordered properly
3. Proper lifting mechanism should be used in order to take construction materials to elevated positions
4. There should be proper storage for clothing
5. There must be a rest area to eat and drink
6. Facilities should be kept warm and ventilated
7. People at the working site should be trained to work safely
8. There should be clear space for people working at the construction site
9. The site should be fenced and warning signs should be used
10. Proper scaffolding should be done for working on roofs or elevated places.
11. Heavy construction members should not be installed manually
12. Mechanical aids should be used for transporting materials
Health & Safety during Operation:
‘Construction professionals need to be aware of the existence and scope of the legal duties, and the standards of care required, to ensure that they, and their employers, discharge the duties and thereby avoid civil and/or criminal liability for breach of the duty’ in Health and Safety in Construction by Thomas Telford Publishing, Thomas Telford Ltd. (2002: 3). Therefore it is important that all the requirements regarding health and safety should be known and practiced in construction. The following criteria should be met
1. The strength of the design should be able to bear all the dead and live loads to which the structure is to be subjected.
2. The electrical wiring should be proper
3. Properly ventilated building
4. Properly applied paint
5. The building should have a proper fire fighting system
6. The building must have easy access to health facilities of the vicinity by Health and Safety in Construction in Northern Ireland (1996: 99)
7. ‘The client should take reasonable steps to satisfy himself that the planning supervisor, principal contractor, project designers and any contractors they appoint directly, are competent and adequately resourced to deal with health and safety problems associated with the project both during the construction as well as the operation of the building’ by Health and Safety in Construction in Northern Ireland (1996: 109)
8. Occupational Safety and Environmental Health Guideline (2009: 4) states that the contractor and project developers should maintain the records of post construction storm water management to ensure the safety and timely maintenance of the building.
9. Dr. Jill Wells and John Hawkins in Promoting Construction Health and Safety through Procurement (n.d.: 5) states that the prequalification of contractors should include the contractor’s record on Operational Health and Safety issues and a health and safety policy should be signed with him

This is because this century offers solutions to many problems in the building and construction industry.... In bridge engineering and construction, sustainable infrastructure involves planning for the project, designing the structure of the bridge, constructing using the right materials, and maintaining the context sensitivity.... The bridge professionals and transportation authorities should ensure that the right materials and construction techniques are used and presented in a consistent, systematic and credible way.... This will require a lot of time to design, rating or assessment of materials to be used (Institution of Civil Engineers, 2001)....
For calculating the operational feasibility of thermal power plant, following steps will be followed: Uninterruptable supply of fuel to the facility Capable of bearing the entire load for which it is being design.... As a general rule in most civil and building constructions, the availability of materials would to a large extent dictate the construction materials to be utilized for the constructions.... As the European building codes become more advanced and in use, newer and better construction methodologies and conventional methods have emerged....
The paper "design of Civil Engineering Construction" presents concepts that are core to the profession of civil engineering.... The main argument presented here is that it is time that engineering goes beyond the mere construction of admirable structures to designing and constructing structures that are sustainable.... It is worth noting that the construction industry makes a huge contribution towards reshaping the environment and therefore the concepts being suggested in the article will add a lot of utility to this sector as it will be ensured that engineering goes a step further to creating sustainable structures....
