Lean manufacturing involves tactical waste reduction methods in business processes. This model focuses only on actions that add value to quality production, cost reduction, less product delivery time, and increased efficiency. Resource-consuming activities that do not add value to effective production (waste) are eliminated. Implementation of this model is expanding rapidly in both manufacturing and service sectors such as electronics, aerospace, healthcare, automotive, and furniture production as a strategy to acquire a competitive edge.
Labor requirement is reduced as utilization of human resources both skilled and unskilled is maximized. The model allows productivity as machines are utilized to the maximum while the less productive one is disposed of. This reduces delivery and production time as well as increases the quality of the services and goods produced. It also provides an opportunity for continuous improvement as the equipment wears out and becomes less productive, and is replaced with efficient ones putting into consideration the technological advancement. Return on assets is increasing significantly with lean manufacturing systems.
