The construction of optical fibres consists of three parts, a core made from a transparent material with a refractive index n1. A layer of cladding made from a transparent material that has a lower refractive index n2 then the core surrounds the core. The cladding adds support to the core structure and reduces the radiation loss to the atmosphere. The final part of the fibre consists of a polymer coating that protects the glass layers from damage. The combination of these three components leads to a dielectric wave-guide that allows light to pass through the It is important to understand how light rays propagate through an optical fibre.
