Application essay/ ment of purpose During my childhood days, skyscrapers have attracted me a lot because it is enough to fascinate a child. Besides, my parents used to spend their leisure time by taking me to the buildings within our locality. But I felt confused because nobody did help me to know the masterminds behind those buildings. Gradually, I began to inquire on the masterminds behind the management of those buildings. Somehow, I managed to unmask the secret behind those skyscrapers, i.e. the magic of engineering and business management. One can see that curiosity leads to discoveries and development in future life. Later, one among my family friends (an engineer) told me that if I pursued a degree in engineering, I could be an engineer manager. But I was in love with the technological aspects of engineering, not the traditional mode of education in engineering. So, I decided to connect my education with engineering and business management. In short, one can see that the technological side of engineering is my personal interest, and business management is my career interest. So, I consider that Engineering Management is the combination of my personal interest and career interest. My aptitude in engineering is interconnected with my curiosity to know more about the secrets behind the construction of big buildings. Still, I am aware of the fact that a mere interest in a field cannot help an individual to be successful in this field. For instance, specialization within engineering can help one prove one’s worthiness in this field. Within this context, my graduation with a degree of Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (BSME) proves my aptitude in engineering. Besides, I am not ready to give up my interest in higher education and my application for the Engineering Management program at this University proves it. On the other side, I know that this program will help me to nurture my aptitude because the course content proves so. My academic and personal accomplishments include B.S ME from Northeastern University and University of Miami (GPA: 3.0 and 3.5 respectively), schooling at Capital Normal University High School, and computing skills including expertise in applications and programming. To be specific, the GPA obtained by me at Northeastern University and University of Miami are enough to prove my academic achievement. Besides, my expertise in computer applications like AutoCAD, Ansys, MatLab, and programming like C++ and Java script proves my personal accomplishments beyond my academic excellence. I know that mere academic accomplishments cannot help a student to be a successful mechanical engineer/engineer manager. Still, I consider that my expertise in Engineering Mechanics &Design, Engineering Computation & Design, and Financial Accounting & Reporting, acquired during my graduation will help me to excel within my major in mechanical engineering. The ability to take on the challenges is important to be professionally successful in the respective field. Within this context, I consider that my prior experience and service as an account manager assistant is helpful to take on the challenges in the field. R. Medina states that, “The engineer manager, regardless of his management level, will have to devote some of his time to planning” (43). To be specific, I worked at sales department and customer service, under an account manager. I used to arrange and attend meetings for my supervisor with our clients. This prior experience in this field helped me realize the importance of decision making in engineering management. Besides, the supervisor believed in my ability because I used to be polite with the clients. I know that apprenticeship will help a fresher in this field to acquire the ability to take on the challenges. This prior experience in the field helped me realize the relationship between business and engineering. In addition, this helped me to take a firm decision on my future, i.e., clarification on my decision to major in mechanical engineering. One can see that sociability plays an important role in the field of Engineering Management. Besides, communication skills will be helpful for an engineer to read the minds of his/her clients. I am proficient in two languages, English and Chinese. I am aware of the importance of sociability within this field because the same can help one to put forth innovative problem solving ideas. I am most sociable and my service at the sales department (say, as account manager assistant) proves so. Besides, I know that team spirit (beyond individual differences) within a well-knit team is utmost important. As a team member, I used to review and discuss contract details with other member within our team. During my college days, I used to help my professor in his grading homework and tests. Moreover, I used to undertake math tutoring, especially helping other students with calculus 1 and 2. As an individual, I consider that one’s personal interest and career interest must have some similarities. Within this scenario, I feel blessed because my personal interest and career interest are same. My enthusiastic attitude helped me to ponder upon the technological aspects of engineering in future years. On the other side, my graduation in engineering helped me to know more about the business aspect of engineering and its future scope. If my personal interest and career interests are different, I will be forced to give up my personal interest and embrace my career interest. To be specific, my personal interest will be crushed. Now, I feel so happy because my personal interest will accelerate my career interest. One need not misunderstand that I am totally immersed in learning and ignore the scope of recreation in my life. For instance, my leisure time activities include: swimming, tennis and soccer. One can see that music soothes human mind. I used to play oboe and classical music is one among my passions. Summing, I consider that this major is the best fit for me because my engineering background proves the same. Besides, I have prior experience in the field of business management and the technical aspects of engineering. To be specific, I wish to have mastery on the business aspects of engineering.
