Personal statement Prompt I Right now, I am 25 years old I was born in the United States of America though has a Korean lineage. I went to Korea with my family when I was young attended elementary school from there but came back to America during my time of attending high school education. I live in California state and studying as a junior in one of the community colleges majoring in business economics. However, I feel that I have to study this course in a reputable University and I am applying to transfer to the University of California. I intend to major in the field of business economics most probably in Business and Econ major area. This implies that I am interested to do a course that is in line with economics. Earlier on, I had enrolled for the course of applied mathematics but due to regular circumstances that interrupted my consistence in class, I decided to terminate it, and since I study bit deep of Math, it will give me better understanding while i am studying business/econ major at new school. Also my experience from late father’s company will help me too. I have now decided to continue with my studies in the field of economics so that I can gain some understanding of some of the economic policies and business knowledge to manage my late father’s company. I decided to abandon applied mathematics after working in my father’s company for a period of two years and got interested in how international businesses occur. I came to know that for an international business to be successful, the management should be well conversant with the international economic policies. Another thing that made me to be interested in economics is how South Korea was affected by taking a bail from International monetary fund (IMF) experienced economic downturn in1997. The effects were so enormous, every household felt the pinch. This made my father to lose a job in the company he was working in even as a family went through hard life due to low income. Therefore, I developed an urge to want to know how economics work. I would like to have an understanding on how international business policies tend to affect countries and how international organizations such as IMF, World Bank etc control the world economy. When I complete my studies, I intent to operate business in Middle East since I have worked in this region and I am conversant with business policies that govern businesses. Therefore, with the experience, I have and the links I have established there, I want to operate my business from there after I have completed my studies. When I moved back to USA, I engaged in activities that are related with economics majorly through internships and employment. In fact, currently, I’m working with a Chinese company called coastline imports, which deals with imports and exports. This working experience has really given me an experience in the field of foreign trade especially in USA and the countries it trades with. While at college, I have registered in several clubs such as economic club. This club particularly deals with issues to do with economics. Indeed this club has broadened my scope of economic thinking since I normally interact with many educationists such as lecturers and my fellow students who have a vast knowledge in this field. In addition, I am actively involved in mathematics group, which try to help students improve their proficiency in mathematics. Given the fact that I was a mathematics student before I came back to USA, this involvement has given me a chance to review some of the mathematics concepts. This is important to me because mathematics is quite relevant to economics I’m studying; hence I would be in a position to understand economic concepts that involve mathematics. Apart from participating in clubs and society at school, I have participated in community activities, which involve volunteer work in various places. Prompt II One of my goals is that after finished my undergraduate degree, I want to keep studying to get MBA degree so that I can be able to operate global company. I am good in mathematics as mentioned earlier and I’m still doing some practice in it because I know that it is a big asset to me when studying economics. Another quality I have is that I am a multilingual Youngman; I can speak and write four languages proficiently. I have a command in English, Japanese, Chinese and Korean. This is a big advantage to me because knowing many languages is a priority when one desires to work in the global company. Japan, Korea and China are some of the countries that are main players in the international trade so I have a big advantage since I understand their language hence I can work in any of them. One of my personal characters is that I tend to find out something new in whatever work I involve in. This character is quite relevant in the field of creativity and innovation, which is a big asset when studying economics because this discipline requires people who are self-motivated to come up with new ideas or develop new ideas on the prevailing circumstances. Moreover, I’m a diligent and service oriented personality, this is evidenced from the various volunteer work I have involved in for example I have been a volunteer in Arcadia retirement center for over a year, I have also volunteered in San Gabriel Valley medical center serving the information desk and also cleaning exercise. I want to be successful global business company leader, and ultimate goal is accomplish what my father couldn’t accomplish with his life time due to his health problem even when I am in college, my late father’s company will still operate in Korea and Saudi Arabia. There is still many people working for my father’s company and after I finish my university degree, I can also go back to my father’s company. Prompt III Generally, my life has been full of difficulties since the time when my father lost a job in one of the companies in Korea due to the economic recession. Our family income could only enable us to meet our basic needs but was not enough for my school fees. My father died of heart attack due to pressure of work and lack of sleep when he was operating his company KOMEE that he started after losing his earlier job. At this point, my uncle decided to take with me to USA so that he can help in paying my fees. Worse enough, my sponsor who was my uncle developed cancer, a situation that further brought more difficulties in my education. It was hard for me to take care of him at the same time take my studies. After the death of my father, I had to step in to take his responsibility in the company he had established. I decided to forego my studies from the college and become the director of KOMEE Company a Middle East engineering company established by my late father. KOMEE pursued a variety of projects in the field of communication infrastructure and equipment supply. It also dealt with desalination plants, power generation and transmission. Moreover, the company also did water purification in Saudi Arabia and neighboring companies. It had signed a big contract of laying optical fiber cable construction with the Saudi Arabia Company but it faced a lot of competition from other companies. The contract later on cancelled. Our company faced management issues a situation, which made it, deteriorate. Therefore, my work experience in my father company in Saudi Arabia was a hand on experience where I was exposed to many management processes at the tender age. The two years experience I had when working as a director in my father’s company in Saudi Arabia has changed my entire thinking in fact it made me to shift my interest from the mathematics I was studying at college to start thinking of pursuing economics in my career. During my work experience in the both voluntary work and employment, I have been able to learn many things on how businesses are run. Some of the interesting aspects I have experienced are the interaction between the customers and workers of the firms. At least I have gained some skills on how to deal with customers from different backgrounds. I have experience in the hierarchy of business and the span of control in doing business. Moreover, the fact that I want to increase my personal knowledge, I just feel that by pursuing a career in economic field I will be able to learn transferable skills that will put me in a good stead of the future. I feel that I will be marketable in the employment field when I complete my studies successfully since people with the knowledge in economics and mathematics are highly required in many sectors.
