Unit SAFEGUARDING CHILDREN AND YOUNG PEOPLE WELLBEING a) Child Protection Provision of safety to children and young people is vital in the monitoring of their development. Prevention of our children from harm is the most excellent way of keeping them safe. Young people and children should in a position to access safe environments anywhere at any time. The most crucial thing is by parents together with their children being aware of factors that put the children at risk of harm. In the provision of protection to the children and young people some precautions should be put in existence. Parents together with other adults should ensure that the activities that the children are engaging in are positive. There should therefore be a total monitoring of children and keeping them away from negative activities. The activities that children should be allowed in most are the curriculum activities such as football, basketball among other games. Adults should be in a position to manage risks. They should understand how to manage different risks. Children should also be trained the basics of managing various risks on their own. The work given to children should be one that puts them to no risks. The work that should mostly be considered to be done by children is the house cores. These tasks are believed to be safe as long as the children are not overworked. These chores also provide children with training as they happen to learn some aspects of cleanliness. Fresh threats to the safety of the children should be considered. As the technology advances, children are becoming exposed to new threats. Therefore, parents should be updated with the upcoming threats to protect their children from such threats. The parents should be in touch with the Local Safeguarding Children Board and contacting them of any upcoming risks for children. This would allow for faster intervention before any or more children are hurt. There should also be the need of allowing children to access health services for maintenance of their health. They should be protected from predisposing factors that put their health at risk. In the achievement of safety for the children organizations such as the Staying Safe Action Plan and Vetting and Barring Schemes have come up with strategies to monitor children’s safety. The staying Safe Action Plan has come up with a fresh Safety Education Coalition to make sure get practical education opportunities that are safe. It has also initiated communications campaign to encourage parents and other people to be responsible when it comes to children matters. The organization has also developed National Safeguarding Unit for third party zone to assist and give advice to third party zone organizations on enrollment methods that are safer (Great Britain, 2007). . The vetting and Barring Scheme have also come in to restrict individuals who are not qualified from engaging children into doing certain volunteer work. It is involved in the vetting of those who carry such work and barring those who have at certain point been engaged in committing offence. Anybody working in activities that are regulated must have passed through CRB check. Barren people will also be prevented from undertaking these positions. 1 (b) Timeline Indicating Serious Case Reviews (Hudson, 2005) Lord Laming was involved in the investigation of Victoria Climbies case an eight year old girl from Ivory that was murdered after suffering years of abuse under the care of her aunt. Bichard investigated the Soham murders which involved the murder of Jessica Chapman and Holly Wells, aged 10 years killed in 2002 by a school caretaker. Bichard inquiry was a decision of Home Secretary for addressing issues of sharing information with other agencies. The report of Lord Laming supports uncertainties concerning information exchange between services assist performers. According to Lord Laming Victoria suffering and death was due to a failure in the system and inadequate communication between the agencies and staffs. The two inquiries have evidences of lack of sharing of the recorded information. Here are instances in Bichard inquiry where the recording of information was not done at all. Bichard came up with various recommendations including; registration of all those who needs to work with young people; national police intelligence system introduction into Wales and England; and provision of training to head teachers and teaching staff to make sure employment of people in consideration to safeguarding rules..Lamings recommended effective professional communication responsibilities within multi-agency support. The government responded to the report through green paper Every Child Matters in the Children Act 2004, Working Together To Safeguard Children, Safeguarding Children, Children Act 2004, and Wales Child Protection Procedures (Driscoll, 2009). Looking at the effects of local guidelines, policies and procedures for safeguarding on day-to-day operation with children, children safety has shown to be monitored in various sectors. The LSCB is equipped with making sure that all the agencies working with children work in peace for support of children welfare and safety bin the area. The LSCB usually involved in the coordination of the work with various local partners to ensure efficient carrying out of the activities. It ensures the local agencies support the welfare and children safety. Children are therefore monitored and precautions taken in conditions that put them at risk of harm (Preston-Shoot, 2012). The Children Act 2004 on Bullying states that any setting should consist of policy for anti-bullying which clearly come up with policies for dealing with behavior of bullying. This therefore minimizes the chances of any kind of bullying. People will fear bullying children as they will have the fear of facing law on attempt to bully children. The UNCRC Article 13 on Freedom allows children to have freedom of expression. Children can express anger, enjoyment, and happiness. Children therefore have the confidence with a wide range of emotions. They are therefore in the position to tell what they are feeling or what they want (Bell, 2008). School Attendance Policy allows all children accessibility to education. Parents or guardians are equipped with ensuring this is followed or they risk being arrested. Schools are allowed to absence a child for genuine reason. Children are therefore required to be in schools and absenteeism is only allowed under genuine reasons. Practitioners should have knowledge of methods connected to attendance and aware of whom to alert on matters relating to children education. The school setting also has got a clear task in relation to the protection of a child. Professionals who are handling children on the daily basis are suppose to undergo training and equipped with skills and rules for safeguarding the children. For efficient protection to children we are suppose to have positive relationships with agencies and professionals are serious when it comes to response to situations involving children. 1 (c) Own Working Setting Processes Complying With Legislation Looking into my recent working environment the attendance of pupils together with together with information relating to them is recorded into the computer and only those who are authorized handle them. The school administration involved in taking of the students’ information always considers their accuracy and relevance. There is usually the sending of newsletters to the parents for updating and information concerning the student as they move for a holiday. In my working setting, some children s’ information are at the register of child protection and the information are only accessible to the teachers when needed and are usually confidential. The information concerning such children is kept safe and not accessible to the public. The information kept concerning pupils is usually accessible to the owner and students are in a position to access them through their portals online. 2 (a) Supporting Self-Confidence and Self-Esteem of Children This requires one to stop assuming the young people, give them time to express themselves and make them feel they are special. There is the need to persuade them to carry out things by themselves. You try to be so close to them making them feel someone is there for them hence giving them the confidence. One can praise the children and encourage them. A child may say he or she cannot do it; therefore you should in a position to convince him or her to try and also give bout the simple ways of achieving the activity. You can encourage a child to try another related act which will give the same outcome as they previous difficult one. His would build the self-esteem in the child. 2 (b) Importance of Supporting Resilience in Children This refers to the ability to deal with challenges in life. Resilience allows children to develop early attachments sustain their expressive progress, since they may get challenges in formation of relationships in the future. It allows children to have positive intellect of self-identity. Caring and supporting children gives them self identity. Supporting resilience in children gives them self-confidence and self-esteem. High self-esteem will help children in fighting challenges that come on their way in life. Self-confidence will encourage communication and strong approach in life. Resilience support in children drives them towards the achievement of their goals. Praising children and rewarding them when they achieve something good is like driving them to try again. 2 (c) Importance of Working with a Child to Ensure Strategies Children should be protected in our presence and also in our absence. This therefore calls us in making our children have ways with which they can protect themselves. Various strategies can be used to help children form protection to them; Give the children information concerning sexual behaviors and relationships. Talking to and reinforcing in children the ways the can handle activities that are risky such as rules during crossing the ropad. Issues concerning drug abuse and bad company should be discussed with children. Dangers that can be caused by some adults should be discussed with children so as to avoid their company. It is better to reinforce in children what is allowed and those that are not allowed; They should yell if someone is hurting them. Children should report anything bad to a grown up or someone that can be trusted. Children should not keep secrets of someone harming them and case like bullying should be reported. Incase of danger they are suppose to run away into safe places. Children should not accept things like money or sweets from people unless permitted by parents or guardians. 2 (d) Ways of Empowering Children to make positive Choices Anyone working with children should be in a position to ensure they support them assist them to maintain their personal well being. One should assist children to get to know the challenges waiting for them in life. One should understand that different children have different ways of doing things and they will always complete after different period of time. Positive relationship is also crucial between child to child, and also between children and adult. Everyone learns by undertaking a risk so when a child wants to do something that is risky just support him or her provided it does not cause any adverse effects to the body. The children assess the risk by themselves as part of learning after feeling the effects of the act. BIBLIOGRAPHY BELL, N. (2008). Ethics in child research: rights, reason and responsibilities.
