BSc MARITIME BUSINESS AND MANAGEMENT By Part A. I intend to study Bachelor of Science Maritime Business and Management. After completing the studies, I would like to work as a maritime operations manager. I also intend to progress with my studies to postgraduate degree and become an international transport, trade and logistics manager. My interest has been in the maritime. Working with Maritime will provide me with an opportunity to work in the biggest industrial area in my country. This is an area, which has been little explored by more people, that is, the field has fewer graduates hence there is an opportunity to discover new things pertaining this field. Therefore this increases my employability chances. Despite that, the course also focuses on commercial, economic, operational and legal subjects that are necessary so as fully to appreciate the activities of the international shipping and its related industries. Therefore, I believe by taking a course in Maritime industry I will stand in a better position to understanding the operations of the maritime industry and how the industry is regulated. Moreover, since my childhood I had the passion to become one of the most famous business person with international connections. My inspiration developed after reading many articles and learning how vehicle importers and other business persons from my country would do business globally and generate huge returns. For this reason, I became more anxious and developed high interest in the maritime industry. Therefore, by studying the Bachelor of Science Maritime Business and Management, I believe I am going to gain better insight into the industry; better skills and knowledge on how the Maritime industry operates and what requirements and skills are required of me to become an operation manager in one of the ports and terminals in my country and business person. Thus, I am certain the course is a core and an enabler that can prepare me physically, emotionally, psychologically and academically to venture into the industry. Part B. There are quite a number of reasons for my choice to study BSc Maritime Business and Management at the Liverpool John Moores University. These can be explained better by a comparison between Liverpool John Moores University and any other university in the UK. In this case, Im comparing and contrasting Liverpool John Moores University and Plymouth University. To begin with, we look at the similarities between the two institutions. Both institutions have same five core modules for the first year. These modules include Economics for Business, International Maritime Business, Maritime Law and Logistics, Maritime Business Skills and Principles of Logistics and Freight Transport (Plymouth University, n.d.; JMU, n.d.). Both institutions also offer a workplace for the students, this work-related kind learning is a very essential element of the study and also the best way to enable students experience the maritime industry by opting to undertake a year’s placement between their second and third years (Plymouth University, n.d.; JMU, n.d.). They match your needs with a suitable potential employer, and you will after that have the opportunity to into practice all the relevant skills and knowledge that you have gained during the first two years of the course. This also offers you with an opportunity to develop your personal skills and earn some money for a year. The experience earned adds value to your resume and, as a result, this boosts your employability. Both institutions also provide the learner with knowledge and study skills. On the other hand, these two institutions also differ in various ways. For instance, Plymouth University offers optional modules in the first year, unlike Liverpool John Moores University. Plymouth University mainly focuses on commercial, economic, operational and legal subjects, required for a full appreciation of the activities of international shipping and its related industries (Plymouth University, n.d.; JMU, n.d.). For the case of Plymouth University, there is an opportunity for a student to specialize with any option as provided for in the modules, unlike in the Liverpool John Moores University where specialisation can be after the completion of second year (Plymouth University, n.d.; JMU, n.d.). Conversely, Liverpool John Moores University has more class hours (around 14 – 15 hours per week) as compared to Plymouth University in which case the class hours per week are less than 14 (Plymouth University, n.d.; JMU, n.d.). Part A. My Choice is Introduction to Logistics. This course enables students gain skill, confidence as well as the ability to deal with people in a caring and professional way; to assess situations for a possible change, to write concise and coherent reports, to make presentations of ideas in a logical manner (both written and spoken), to summarise and present data, to work independently as well as a team player, providing solutions to the emerging problems. This program is aimed towards equipping by training and supporting knowledgeable and skilled practitioners, who understand the relevance of service users, and to giving them a say and a choice in the services available to them (Ghiani, Laporte and Musmanno, 2013). This course has various modules. Year one, students get an introduction to social work theory and how it can be applied to relating well with people at the workplace. This is backed by the studying other disciplines like law, ethics and social policy. Here a student can develop skills in communication, assessment, intervention, planning and review as well as show their ability to work directly with service users. In addition to a 100 day placement, there are five modules: contemporary social work practice; social work: Theory, method and skills; law and policy for practice; social inclusion and poverty; research methods. Year 2 covers further business functions and provides the students with operational knowledge appropriate to the maritime and logistics business. It examines marketing, operations, shipping markets, maritime management, shipping geography and management finance. It enables students to develop an understanding of all the elements of managing an organisation’s workforce. The student will further develop the understanding of the logistics systems: social work specialist practice; dissertation; as well as a second professional placement enabling students to develop their social work practice skills further. Theories of Business Logistics Reverse Logistic Theory This is the process of recapturing value from finished goods, reducing waste and creating additional value for finished goods. Ways for reverse logistics include remanufacturing of returned stock, the return of unsold stock and repurchase of already sold goods for the purpose of reselling parts or reusing old parts the relevant parts. The costs associated with reverse logistic include transportation of returned stock, the cost of the time the employee spend and the parts to reconstruct the repurchased goods and return them (Handfield & Bozarth, 2012). Inventory Theory This is the surplus of a company’s products stored in its premises. The inventory allows companies to restock goods quickly and efficiently once the customer purchases the available stock of similar goods. The cost involved here is calculated by the overall space used to store unstocked goods compared to the possibility that additional consumers will be willing to buy similar stock before another scheduled shipment arrives (Waters & Rinsler, 2014). When the overall benefit resulting from the of a stockroom space to hold inventory is lower than that of the upkeep for the space, maintenance and the decline in space for stocking other items, an organisation can decide to reduce its holding inventory. Supply Chain Management Theory This is yet another inventory theory where the distributor incurs the cost of inventory so as to provide a consistent and sufficient restocking of multiple sites from a single location. For example, if you own a store with low inventory space and you run out of a product, you are in a position to receive new stock from a local branch distribution office to restock your supply (Handfield & Bozarth, 2012). A local distributor can restock your store quickly than when you were to order products directly from a distant supplier, say foreign supplier. Role of Logistics Logistic is essential for the success of any organisation (Waters & Rinsler, 2014). Logistics is considered an important behind-the-scenes operational activity. It is a strategic tool for creating customer value and loyalty. Most big companies attribute their prosperity to their international logistics systems (Handfield & Bozarth, 2012). They find out that integrating tasks in the organisation as well as across the logistics pipeline, building a very strong relationship with products suppliers and working with customer-focused logistics service providers are all critical to building a comparative competitive advantage through logistics.
