Personal ment Communication has always played a vital and highly interesting role in my life. As a high school I became a committee member of my school student association. In this capacity, I became the representative student voice in discussions pertaining to student affairs with the school administration. I was the person who listened to the woes of my classmates and made sure that their concerns reached the proper school authorities for relevant action.
School politics aside, I also played soccer as a semiprofessional player with the Kit Chee soccer club in Hong Kong. Soccer is a game that requires more than just the skill to kick the ball with your feet or hear, it also requires you to be able to communicate effectively with your teammates in order to ensure the proper execution of game plays.
During my free time, I also volunteer at various charitable institutions and civic groups in Hong Kong where I participate in activities that help bring joy and laughter to the under privileged members of my community. The few hours a week that I spend talking to them about their problems and situation life seems to help alleviate the inner turmoil and sadness that they feel. Sometimes, I dont even have to talk to them, they just want someone who can sit with them and listen to what they have to say.
Most recently, I have been working as a Sales Consultant at Marc by Marc Jacobs in Hong Kong. In this capacity, I find that I am required to be highly skilled in the art of communication because I need to make sure that supplies are restocked and that the clients will always get their needs attended to.
Due to the high importance and relevance of communication in my life, I decided that I needed to learn about the intricacies of communication and why our world may cease to exist without it. As a communication Studies major, I plan on helping to further develop the field of communication by creating and understanding the new and emerging forms of communication in relation to its function within a societal setting.
It is my belief that I will be able to perform well in this field of study because of my outgoing and rational personality. I am inclined to get to know different people and turn them into friends because of my gift of gab. My desire to be a friend and helpful to everyone has turned me into a person of courage, brave enough to accept any challenge that comes my way and speak my mind in public when I know that I am in the right.
When I was a committee member in my high school student association, I helped to organize an inter-school singing contest with other schools. Due to the unavailability of our own school hall, we had to change the location to the organizing school hall instead. Due to the change in venue, a miscommunication occurred that resulted in our being given on 6 hours to prepare the student hall for the event. However, I was able to help sort out the problem through a dialog with the proper parties and in the end, we received a high evaluation result from the other participating schools.
I was very proud of what I accomplished at that time because my team managed to finish our job efficiently even with the limited time frame allotted to us. Our team work and communication skills proved to be exactly what the project needed in order to become a success. With our leadership and communication skills, we managed to pull off an impressive event that earned a high degree of appreciation from the other schools.
I am extremely proud of my academic and civic accomplishments while I was a student in Hong Kong. I was an exemplary student who managed to produce good grades even as I was extremely busy with my school politics and civic duties. I thought I was invincible at the time. Nobody could touch me and my accomplishments as one of the best and the brightest students of my school. But all of that changed when I came to America for my university studies.
Maybe it was because I lost the confidence that I had in my communication abilities, being not so fluent in English. Maybe it was because I was experiencing culture shock. Maybe it was because I needed time to adjust to my new school and surroundings. Whatever the reason, I failed to perform as I normally did during my first two quarters of study in the United States. It is not something that I am proud of but it is something that I am looking to rectify as soon as I can. I am hoping that the University of California will be the university that will help me redeem myself.
I make no excuses for my lackluster academic performance. I take full responsibility for not being able to juggle the family problems that suddenly arose while I was studying in the United States, with the commitment I made to myself and my parents to deliver only the highest marks in all of my classes. The spring quarter was quite an emotional one for me that resulted in my dismal academic performance. I was so affected by the family situation that was going-on overseas that I was compelled by my love of family to return to Hong Kong over the summer in order to help sort out not only our family problem, but also the inner turmoil that I had been experiencing since I was having a bit of a hard time adjusting to the American way of life. Not to mention the academic workload that I was not used to which caused my less than brilliant performance in a majority of my classes.
With my transfer to the University of California, I am hoping to be given a chance to have a Freshman Year do-over. I am looking forward to starting over my freshman year with a clean academic slate now that I am better adjusted to my surroundings, my family problems are behind me, and I am more capable of communicating in English that I was before.
I have worked as hard as possible to overcome the problems that I had in the past that resulted in my failed academic performance. I have taken steps to ensure that I will perform as best as possible as a Communication Studies major first and foremost, by improving my own English language skills. Without a clear and coherent grasp of the default academic language in the United States, will not be able to compete academically. That is why I have every intention of becoming a student of note once I enroll in English 1A during the winter semester. The better I understand what makes the English language work, the better my academic performance at UC will be.
I realize that I am asking you to trust me as an incoming freshman at UC even though I have already failed before. The last thing UC wants is to have an image of accepting loser students. But I am not a loser student, I was merely mal-adjusted during my first academic term. I have the full ability and intention of turning that around during the upcoming semester. All I need, is for the University of California to take a chance on me. I assure you, I will not fail this time.
