Your full full October 28, ment of Purpose Applicant’s Please write here Ihave recently applied for admission in the Dual Degree in Petroleum Economics & Management with Mineral and Energy Economics program that is being offered by the Colorado School of Mines and Institut Français du Petrole. My basic aim behind getting admission in the dual degree program is to gain an in-depth understanding of all issues and concepts related to petroleum and mineral economics. My background in the energy sector stems mostly from my choice of petroleum engineering as my undergraduate field of study. I have a desire to make educational and professional progress in the field of Petroleum Economics because of my huge interest in this field. I want to play a valuable role in the development of Energy sector of my country by getting a degree from a renowned institute. Upon completing my graduation in May 2014, I intend to build my professional experience by working for energy/natural resources production or consulting firm for a few years preferably in a region like Central Asia (Kazakhstan), Russian, Europe or North Africa. I also want to improve my knowledge of the Russian language. With my mind and ideas planned, I subsequently intend to make the knowledge of my education and professional experience readily available through a vertically integrated, environmentally friendly, and socially conscious business venture in the field of energy and natural resources. Another thing, which I would like to mention here, is that I have the ability to contribute to the educational experience of other students. Some of my core strengths and abilities include: Proficiency in the use of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Access Good knowledge of Russian and English languages Interest in traveling and reading books I have served as a logistics specialist for the United State Navy. My job responsibilities included purchasing, storing, and distributing daily supply needs of all ships and submarines present within our pacific battleground. The logistical needs ranged from food substances and payroll to the purchasing and storage for fuel from suppliers and the eventual distribution of this fuel to other ships. Now I would like to highlight my academic deficiencies. After I got admission in the University of Texas at Austin (UT) in 2006, I had no choice but to get a part-time job to manage my educational costs and my grandparents’ legal and medical bills. A few months prior, my grandmother and father moved from our country of birth to the United States because of the civil war in our country. To prevent my grandmother from being sent back, my father had to hire an attorney to be intervened on her behalf and to get legally status in the United States. My father and I were lucky to escape from the similar situation a few years prior through the United Nations Refugees program. My father’s income was very low and my grandparents could not work to earn money because they were undocumented at the time. Facing these difficulties, I felt obliged to assist my father foot the bills of the family and that was the time, when my part-time job turned into a full-time job at the detriment of my grades. However, our family financial and personal situations remained almost same for the next 3 years. I did not know whom should I call for help. I felt like trapped in a difficult situation. On one hand, I could not stop helping my family and on the other hand, my grades were getting affected. I just kept doing hard work to support my family at the detriment of my education. Unfortunately, my university could not handle my poor academic performance for so long and I was handed a three years academic suspension from the University. With my academic fate set at the time, I decided to look for another job out of the city. I decided to join the Navy on a short termed contract. The training and counseling assistance that I received through military was very great. Despite being located at distance from my family in California, my job as a logistics specialist in the Navy not only helped me support my family financially but also guaranteed my educational costs for the next 15 years. Such financial assistance and guarantees from the military have proven to be very handy now because they have made me decide to complete my degree in petroleum engineering while having the minor in Finance. As I matured physically and mentally, my attitude regarding my past academic and personal setbacks changed because some of those setbacks have helped me better understand the true value and necessity of education. If I could go back to my past now, there are not too many things that I would do otherwise because I was very ignorant of the resources, which were available to me at that time. Moreover, there are few things in life, which are very important to us; our families are probably at the top of that list. When it comes to my GRE score, the reason for my less than the adequate score is insufficient preparation time. After my honorable discharge from active duty with the military, I immediately returned to school. Given that I was out of school for almost 2 years, I had to put extra efforts to come parallel with the studies because the petroleum curriculum had been changed in that span of time. Since my return to the civilian life, I have been reactivated twice during the summer for special mission in Europe. I also got married and had my first child after a year. The cumulative effect of all these events left a little time for me to prepare for the GRE test. However, I gradually improved my semester GPA that is also evident from my current transcripts. The opportunity to improve knowledge through higher education should not be taken too lightly nor should it be wasted. About two years ago, I started to reflect upon the current state of the energy industry and thought how my undergraduate degree in petroleum engineering will best fit or utilized in a globally connected industry. My decision to pursue a career in the energy or natural resources management is due to the vision of a global citizen that I have always had of myself. I have had the opportunity to visit about 26 countries spanning over five continents and among which I have live in about 70 percent of these countries for at least one month. One of the major bridging gaps that I found to be among the determinant factors between highly industrialized countries and others were the underdevelopment and mismanagement of energy and other natural infrastructure. The economic and national importance of a proper energy policy to the United States and to some extent to the globe has also shaped my decision to improve my educational achievements in my prospective major. Over time, I decided to focus my education in a field that will learn the finer points of the exploration, development, and improvement of energy and other natural resources infrastructure. As I look forward at the prospect to pursue a graduate degree, I have decided to choose a program and an environment, which is known for its supportive mindset regarding applied learning, growth, and success in the field of natural resource economics and energy management. Such is the case for Colorado School of Mine’s Department of Economics and Social Science. A dual degree in Mineral and Energy Economics from Colorado School of Mines (CSM) and Diplôme DIngénieur from Institut Français du Petrole (IFP) offers the best education with in terms of learning about the managerial aspects and economics dynamics of the energy and the natural resource industry. Such graduate degrees coming from two different world-class institutions will allow me not only to grow intellectually but also to better understand some of the decisions that I will be confronted with as a future energy leader/investor in the international markets. The distinctive international dimension of these two degrees will help me best learn about the decision-making procedures, sensitivity, and economic analyses from the European and American perspectives. The Colorado School of Mines is known for its well-experienced faculty in the field of petroleum engineering. It is due to the highly qualified faculty of this school, that today I feel satisfied while thinking of getting admission in this prestigious school. I want to complete my masters under the guidance of well-experienced faculty of the Colorado School of Mines, as it will help me become a highly qualified petroleum engineer with excellent command over minerals and energy economics. Summing it up, I believe that the Colorado School of Mines and Institut Français du Petrole can become a valuable part of my educational and professional success by providing me with excellent education in my desired field of study. I am sending this statement of purpose to get admission in the Dual Degree in Petroleum Economics & Management with Mineral and Energy Economics program. I would be grateful if the authorities accept my application. I am looking forward to hear from you soon.
