PEER EVALUATION FORM Use the following questions to evaluate your peer’s research paper. Direct your comments to your peer. Evaluator (your name): Writing the Research Paper 1. Identify the subject of your peer’s research paper. Explain why the subject is too broad, too narrow, or appropriate for the length of the paper. The research paper addresses the issue of augmented usage of prescription drug and the associated risks and benefits. The essay also highlights the fact that how pharmaceutical companies are now focusing more on making their business more lucrative rather than the health and safety of the public. The topic of the paper is extensive as it requires a comprehensive medical reasoning explaining that why such habit of frequent usage of prescription drugs can cause severe consequences. Moreover, the strategies adopted by various Pharmaceutical companies require a thorough analysis of some of the leading entities in this field and how they formulate their advertisement campaigns. Keeping the mentioned rationale into account, the topic is too broad to be discussed in limited length. 2. Find the thesis statement for the research paper. Write the sentence that you believe expresses the thesis statement (For an example of argument thesis statements, see Successful College Writing, p. 593-4). The thesis statement of the research paper is “The lack of proper education on the risk and benefits of prescription drugs as well as the proper use has made them become more of a hindrance than a help.” 3. Identify passages or paragraphs that provide rational evidence or an emotional appeal that struck you as significant and effective (Successful College Writing, pp. 560-1 and 596-8). The third paragraph provides a sound and rational reasoning that how lack of knowledge related to the prescription drugs can label an effective drug as useless. The paragraph also clarifies that knowledge is highly essential in order to avoid the adverse consequences of using prescription drugs. The last paragraph of the paper concludes the paper quite effectively and on an emotional note. The final sentences articulate that how significant the issue is and the absence of awareness can be costly both in terms of health and wealth. 4. Identify passages or paragraphs of the paper that you found most interesting and effective. The fourth paragraph of the paper provides a remarkable fact that how pharmaceutical companies are now adopting improper ways to market the prescription drugs. The fact that these companies have hired attractive sales agents and are using digital media as a channel for marketing is quite interesting. 5. Find and list those paragraphs a. That needs to be supported with more specific details. b. That contains any logical fallacies/faulty reasoning. Recommend strategies to improve the effectiveness of those paragraphs. a. The fifth paragraph of the paper needs to include some details highlighting that how consumer can make risk and benefit analysis while evaluating the side-effects of a prescription drug. In addition, the third paragraph can include more eccentric strategies currently being adopted by the pharmaceutical companies to market their prescription drugs. b. The essay does not contain any such paragraph which contains fallacies or faulty reasoning. 6. Identify places in the paper where the author fails to maintain an objective point of view. What steps would you recommend to the author to correct the problem? You have notably deviated from the topic in the second paragraph of the paper. The paragraph primarily discusses how people get their prescription for different drugs from different physicians without taking into consideration their conflicting effects. To maintain the objectivity and coherency of the paper, you can include these facts in the fifth paragraph of the paper which talks about how proper knowledge of efficacy of any drug is essential. 7. Check the writer’s sources and documentation format for both in-text citations and the References page to ensure that they conform to APA requirements. Identify any errors that need to be corrected in the final draft. In the fourth paragraph, the quotation by Donna Murphy does not include the year of publication. All the references have been citied correctly and comply with the APA requirements. 8. Identify any missing elements for the essay (title, abstract, thesis statement, support for claims, in-text citations, conclusion, or reference list). The essay does not have any missing elements. The abstract and thesis statement are well written and provide an apt idea about the main body of the paper. You have provided references and in-text citations where ever any assertion has been made. The last paragraph concludes the paper very effectively providing appropriate reasoning. Lastly, the reference list complies with the APA writing style. 9. Identify any unity or coherence issues that you find. (In the Prentice Hall Reference Guide—unity and development of paragraphs, pp. 20-27). The second paragraph does not have a clear topic sentence which can describe what the paragraph is trying to explain. The third paragraph of the paper lacks coherency as it abruptly changes the discussion from how knowledge is extremely vital for the proper and safe usage of prescription drugs, to the fact that now pharmaceutical companies are adopting unconventional methods to market their prescription drugs. 10. Identify any areas where more effective use of transitional words and phrases would improve the coherence of the essay. (See Successful College Writing, pp. 259-260.) In the third paragraph, to increase the coherency, phrases such as “above all’ and “in other words” can be used before the start of the second sentence. In order to enhance the coherency of the last sentence of the fourth paragraph, that presents a consequence that how the situation has caused the entities to give priority to their profit, transition words such as “accordingly”, “consequently” and “hence” can be utilized. 11. Additional Comments: You have managed to express your thoughts and reasoning appropriately providing the limited length of the paper and considering the broadness of the topic. The references used are authentic and substantiate your examination. The essay contains both emotional appealing and pertinent analysis which furthers confirms your work. Although a few concerns related to the coherency and absence of topic sentence were identified in paragraphs but this can be overcome quite easily through practice. Overall the paper is quite well presented and structured including all the relevant components of a good quality essay. Read More
