My Doctoral Course - Research Proposal Example

Dear Dr. Burton, I am honoured to be accepted to such a prestigious program. It has always been my dream to study at Columbia I am looking forward to receiving guidance from you and other faculty members at Columbia University. When I attended the interview with you last week, I was so overwhelmed that I forgot to enquire about scholarships. I assume that most students in the doctorate program usually receive scholarships at Columbia and I would like to find out what kind of scholarship is available to me. It is imperative that I work for one of your research team or get a scholarship. I got married just one year ago and my husband is presently a student therefore our financial situation is tight. Due to the limited funds I have available in my bank account I will have to give up my job to study at Columbia University. Thus I was hoping to have a full scholarship for the first two years if possible. I am aware that the course work in the first two years is very demanding therefore I would like to be able to focus my attention on my studies. After the first two years I am willing to work as a TA as I have six years of experience teaching at college and university level. I am confident of my ability to work as a TA and carry out my research efficiently to make me eligible for further research grants Having done volunteer work teaching elementary school students last year, I am interested in your course ‘artistic development of children’. I would like to share their artistic experience through your course. I would also like to know more about your research on learning, and transfer of learning in the arts. I feel that your research has connections to my doctoral proposal. I wish to research the relationship between students’ ability to apply mediums and the course that I offer. The relationship between students’ ability and my teaching method deals with learning and transfer of learning which I believe is an important subject especially in creative activity such as art. I look forward to discussing my interests in your research. Your course ‘Artistic development: Adolescence to adulthood’ also captures my interest. In my teaching experience, I felt that artistic development in the adolescent stage has a great influence on adulthood. The course will lead me to a better understanding of my students and it would help me in my curriculum development. Throughout my life, I have worked as long and as hard as I possibly can and I am dedicated to continuing to do so to bring about beneficial changes in both school and society through my art. I find extraordinary satisfaction and fulfilment both in the practice of art and in teaching art to others. My life’s aim is to deepen my understanding and contribute to the existing knowledge so that I can leave a legacy that my successors may benefit from.   I would be grateful for any help you can offer in my application for a full scholarship for my doctorate course.
