Download file to see previous pages As a consequence of my belief about the motivational dimension of students, I have come to the conclusion that school is a setting where one is allowed to discover new ideas and ways of thinking. Therefore the purpose of school is to provide a place where an individual can be exposed to different ways of thinking and thereby empower the individual to make quality decisions in life.

In view of the fact that school provides a gateway to new horizons, it is the conviction of the author of this paper that all children should be educated. It is their right to learn and be exposed to a plethora of ideas about life. Regardless of their color, race, creed, socio-economic background, physical, intellectual or emotional state, all children should be educated.

Although I believe that it is the responsibility of the family as the first agent of socialization to teach truths and values to the child, the school also needs to teach universal truths. It is necessary for the peaceful functioning of society in that students will know the standard of behavior of their society and may be motivated to conform to these truths as highlighted in their school.

Consistent with this idea of the family as the major socialization agent, the teaching of character building and morality should definitely be primarily the responsibility of the family. However, schools can play a major part in continuing this education that was previously taught at the home. The juncture where the values of the home and those of the school come into conflict is the point where the school is no longer able to assist in character building because the home takes over as the major player in the dissemination of character and moral guidance.

In view of the fact that the family should instruct the student in the values and beliefs that they would like perpetuated, it is, therefore, the teacher’s role to be one of the facilitator of learning.
