While animals have other different forms of communication as exemplified earlier, language is what men use in order to communicate. However, because of the diversity of the species of man exhibited through the different races and cultures around the world, numerous languages are now in existence. Consequently, so that people may become more productive in many circles and govern themselves successfully towards progress, and with the rising need for a more effective international communication, bilingual education has gained immense popularity that many of the major foreign languages, like Spanish and French, are now being taught as early as primary school. In the United States, bilingual education is given special importance as it is home to many nationalities.

Language is “a collection of patterns regulating social life” (Bowers, 1989 cited in Nowak-Fabrykowski and Shkandrij, 2004). That is, human languages or natural languages is the system of a combination of symbols and sounds, the purpose of which is communication—the act of understanding and being understood. Language is set in a societal context wherein it differs from one country to another, while dialect is the different variants of the official language in a particular country, not including a country which has three different major languages because of the region (i.e. Switzerland’s major languages are Italian, French, and German). 
Language Acquisition is “a natural developmental process of gaining knowledge and mastery of a speech system in a living environment” (Pham, 1994). “Language is a code that we learn to use in order to communicate ideas and express our wants and needs” (Surrency, n.d.). It starts from birth with the newborn baby being aware of the sounds around them, as shown by their reaction to them, and is reinforced by their immediate environment as the years go by and their brain develops to accommodate the understanding and use of syntax and semantics. ...Download file to see next pagesRead More
