Not only does it concentrate on equipping these groups in terms of competencies; the school also emphasizes its ultimate vision of teaching them to have compassion for the underserved. This is primarily my reason for choosing Morehouse as an educational institution – it does not only solely focus on technical expertise, but also in instilling values amongst its students, particularly selfless service especially for the underprivileged. Its goals have been poignantly articulated in the school’s logo that had a particularly striking effect on me: “the achievement of excellence; knowledge of medicine; service to those who need medical care; and wisdom of a man and his environment.

”I trace my roots from Mexico, with parents who had meager means. That is why respect for minorities such as myself is a core consideration in my choice of a medical teaching institution. My minority status did not inhibit me from pursuing my dreams, despite very adverse conditions; several times, I had to work full-time – and at some point, even stop school temporarily – to lend financial assistance to my family, while simultaneously subsidizing my studies. I viewed these instances as temporary setbacks, and have learned much from them; in fact, I owe my strength to these experiences.

It has made me a man of fortitude and has taught me to go beyond myself and reach out to others.This city-size is ideal for gaining practical expertise, being exposed to a variety of medical needs. More importantly, it would allow me to gradually develop responsibility and autonomy in my practice commensurate with my abilities. I would strongly prefer a setting that would allow me to help as many people as possible, especially those who are in deprived areas.
