I have always been fascinated by how people have been able to make big names at a very young age; a prime example of this being Mark Zucerkburg, the founder and Facebook, the largest social media company in the world, which is recognized as one of the top brands of the current time. I believe studying business management would enable me to not only understand the concept of business, but also allow me to think out of the box and apply those skills at work. I think education grooms a person, and if the education discipline is that in which one wants to pursue a career, then there remains practically nothing between success and the person, assuming he puts in all his efforts into his work. Studying business management would not only allow me to understand various theories that underpin how businesses are managed, but would also allow me to learn from real life experiences of people, that I could later use to my help when I start my career. Moreover, almost all business management courses have an internship requirement before graduation, and that I believe, is the perfect time when young business graduates get to apply theoretical knowledge at work and get hands on experience with real life scenarios. Once I get done with my Bachelors’ Degree in Business Management, I would have a lot of career opportunities lying in front of me. To start off with, I would ideally want to start my own company from scratch and take it to the verge of success. However, sometimes situations arise that cause a deviation from the prime plan; in these circumstances too I believe having studied business management I would be open to a wide array of jobs around the globe. A look down business management graduates tell us that they have been able to discover innumerable career opportunities in all fields of work, including accounting, finance, human resource, supply chain management and various others. Part B In this section I would be comparing the university where I would be pursuing my education from, Liverpool John Moores University (LJMU), against another university which teaches the discipline that I would be pursuing; Manchester Metropolitan University Coventry University (MMU). LJMU gives a rough timeline of completion of the BA Hons Degree in Business Management as three years, while CU also gives a similar time frame for degree completion. A look at the course structure of the two programs also proves that both of them are highly similar; at MMU formal examinations make up approximately 40% of the overall grade, coursework and essays around 30% and practical/project works and presentations 10%, while at the LJMU examinations make up 45% of the grade and 25% of it is constituted by coursework and essay, while other components remain the same. As far as the modules are concerned, LJMU offers about five Level 4 Core modules (Academia Study Skills, Business Economics, Business & Society, Introduction to Management and Finance & Principles of Marketing), four Level 5 Core modules (Quality and Operations Management, Small Business Management & Accounts, Managing People and Organizations & Contemporary Issues in Management) along with the choice of one option module to be selected from five options, and three Level 6 Core modules along with two option modules to be selected from a total of five options. Moving onto MMU the modules are almost similar to those offered at LJMU along with a few changes. Here, in the first year of university a student needs to complete 4, thirty credit unit courses each made up of courses including Dynamic Business Environments, Finance and Accounting Information for Managers, Ideas Creativity & Entrepreneurship and Understanding and Managing People. On the flip side, second year courses are made up with a similar credit hour structure shared amongst courses including Managing Effective Organizations, Marketing and Operations, Responsible Enterprise and Work Based Learning. Finally, third year courses are made up amongst Global Strategy, Leadership in Context and two other optional units. A visit to the LJMU Department of Business Management makes one feel that this is the place where one should be studying. Not only does it have one of the best faculties of Business Management all across the UK, but it is also houses a lot of research done in the field. Plus the class rooms are well designed in a manner that they attract students towards them. As far as MMU is concerned, it too has all the facilities mentioned but MMU seems more of a crowded university with a higher number of professor to student ration. Therefore I believe LJMU is a much better place to pursue studies from as compared to MMU. Part C At Liverpool John Moores University there are five modules offered in the first year of university. One of these modules is about Business & Society. This module seeks to provide students with knowledge regarding various types of businesses that exist, and their impact on the society. Moreover, this course also takes a deeper look at the subject to consider the impact on the society of various actions taken by businesses across the globe. A key area of this module looks at two types of businesses – For Profit and Non Profit. This paper seeks to determine the areas of difference between these two classifications of businesses, and also look for areas of convergence between the two. Furthermore, this paper shall also determine why a business would ideally want to set up itself as a not for profit business in comparison to a for profit business (Plas and Lewis, 2001). The core difference between these two types of the businesses is, as the name suggests, that for profit businesses exist to make profit for all concerned stake holders including the sponsors, shareholders etc. Here the main concern of running the business is to maximize profits, minimize costs, and alongside all this ensure that business is carried out in an ethical manner. On the flip side a nonprofit business has altogether different motives of its existence, which is to serve for the betterment of the community as a whole. Comparison of these two types of business can also be done from taxation point of view, where for profit businesses pay taxes on their profits and operations, while nonprofit businesses usually do not. Furthermore, not for profit businesses can only use their funds for anything besides the reason for which the business was formed, whereas the same does not hold true for For-Profit businesses. Another important difference between these two types of businesses is that when a for profit business goes out of operations and into liquidity, all of its assets are wound up and rationally distributed amongst its shareholders. On the contrary, the same does not hold true for Non Profit entities, where upon liquidation they are bound to pass on their assets to other non-profit entities, or to the social cause to whose benefit their business existed for (Nonprofit vs. Traditional Business Plans). Having pointed out the key differences above we now need to understand why one opts for Non Profit business over For Profit business, when clearly everyone out there in the business world exists to make profits. There are many projects that are for a social cause and ideally of the type that banks and venture capitalists would not invest into. This is where come in the need of Non Profit businesses. It is mainly the area of funding that determines if a Company should be for profit or not for profit. Let’s take the example of a Company that is working on providing cheap ventilators to people of under developed countries like Africa. Clearly, no bank would fund such initiative because it would not really yield profits. This is why business entities could consider setting up as Non Profit entities as there are clearly many philanthropists out there who would be willing to fund such cause not because to them it seems that such projects would yield profits, but because such projects are carried out for the humanity as a whole (Bobba, 2009). Therefore what needs to be understood here is that it is eventually the source of funding that determines if a business should be setup as for profit or nonprofit venture (Should Your Business Be Nonprofit or For-Profit?).
