Chapter 5: Constructive Learning Theory Constructivism refers to a set of theories about learning that emerged in Europe but introduced in the United States around the 1970s. This occurred during the civil rights movements and social reforms. Constructivism, especially in its social forms, asserts that the learner is much more actively involved in a joint enterprise with the teachers and peers in creating knowledge. The constructivist theory posits that people construct their own understanding and knowledge of the world experiencing the world and reflecting on those experiences.

Cognitive constructivism put much focus on the individual learner and emerged from the thinking and research done by Piaget. He believed that knowledge was acquired as a result of the long life constructive process in which we try to organize the structure and restructure our experiences in light of existing schemes of thought. Piaget provides the four stages of cognitive development as the psychological states that children pass through as they grow up. Vygotsky, a Russian psychologist proposed the theory of constructivism and put much emphasis on the underlying process rather than the ultimate state of human development.

He focused on the social rather than the human cognitive development. Chapter 6: Online collaborative learningOnline learning emerged in the late 20th century and various models have come up in support of it as a tool knowledge transmission. The online collaborative theory is clearly articulated as a theoretical framework that is used to guide the learning process in the Knowledge Age. The objective of OCL is a collaborative discourse that supports and advances knowledge – construction activities.

Online collaborative learning pedagogy discusses a variety of online pedagogies that can facilitate knowledge in an educational setting. The framework of OCL and its three phases provide a guideline for curriculum design, implementation and assessment. In the context of online collaborative learning, it is important to note that Knowledge Age both requires knowledge advancements. The knowledge Age mindset seeks the best way to solve a problem rather than merely following what is written in the textbook.

The online collaborative learning OCL theory has various models that can suit each learner and it will be implicit in the need to clarify the theoretical foundations. It is important to note that effective online learning tools and environment provide new directions in the OCL technologies. Chapter 7: OCL Pedagogies in Practice. There are four different scenarios that are exploited in this chapter that show how to correlate online and blended learning models. These models are applicable in both formal and non-formal educational context.

There are specific examples that have been obtained from semi-fictionalized on line learning application allow the reader to visualize the real curricula and student interaction. The four scenarios are obtained from real online schools. They include online simulation and case virtual organizations, student-led online seminars, a co-production of real products and programs and lastly, online educational games and immersive learning environments.
