In this essay, therefore, one ought to discuss the views of Garcia, and if such views can be used to describe deaf children. In addition, I will also provide other sources and examples that can also be applied in this topic, for example, the analysis that was carried out by Jennifer Herbold on the four ASL students.

In the end, I will provide a summary and conclusion for my essay. contents agree with Garcia (2009) and I would use the term emergent bilinguals with deaf children. Names that are given to individuals play a greater role in the way other people relate or even associate with them. This owes to the idea that it is from such names, for example, Limited English Proficient, whereby some description can be made from them, influences the attitudes shown towards them. Therefore, classifying such children as emergent bilinguals removes the limitations that can be given to them as non-proficient English Speakers.

Garcia (2009, p. 322, L. 28- 29, and p. 323, L. 1.). Moreover, such names also prevent those who are tutoring them from knowing the best choices of the syllabus that can be used in ensuring their education modes. As a result, this calls for the use of a general name that is regarded easier in understanding and interpretation of how they should be handled. In her analysis of the four ASL students, Herbold argues that the students could use their first language to express themselves in the second language.

(Herbold, 2008, p. 218, L. 22). This also brings into an argument the need of encompassing and appreciating one’s first language owing to the idea that it is one largely learned and thus easily understandable and usable. This means that if the first language of such students was not given keen attention, making them understand the aspects of the second language, (Garcia, 2009, p. 323, L. 29-31). According to Herbold, parental assistance also plays a role in ensuring that such deaf students can use the signs to describe what they would wish to express in words as the hearing students do.

This owes to the closeness that such children have and give to their parents making them believe they are the best people to relate to. Moreover, they appreciate it more when the adults help them with the simple drawings and even the initial writing of their names.
