Teacher In your opinion, what are the advantages and/or disadvantages of identifying and labeling children? What are the advantages and/or disadvantages of considering special needs/varying abilities as variations of normal development?
Labeling is never been good and that also goes to the children. If labeling damages an adult’s self-esteem so much more with the children who are still very vulnerable because they are still in their formative years. Often, these labels becomes a self-fulfilling prophesy as children in their young minds tend to believe what adults are labeling them.
Children have varying needs and others may have special needs and therefore may need special consideration. This special consideration of children’s needs and varying abilities is what is more advisable than labeling children. Consideration empowers and enables them to have the confidence and self-esteem to believe that they can overcome whatever challenges they may have. Consideration begets self-esteem among children which is a powerful enabler among them to do better. As a result, children’s development becomes normal even if there are challenges becomes special consideration as an intervention is effective in addressing whatever challenges a children may have.
Labeling on the other hand achieves nothing. It only makes a child resentful to the person who is labeling him or her and worst, the child believes the label that is casted on him or her. And these labels are often negative. These negative labels becomes self-fulfilling prophesy that instead of the child to develop normally and to get better, the child deteriorates and his or her development becomes difficult if not stunted because the label stuck that the child is no good at all. Labeling children therefore in all its form should be avoided because it is never been good. Read More
