Extract of sample "Shapes and the Color Purple"

I chose the activity to write about because it shows standard 4c: Using a broad repertoire of developmentally appropriate teaching/learning approaches. When we went on the nature walk looking for shapes, the children’s curiosity about their environment was encouraged. At the same time, I was able to get an idea of which students knew their basic shapes. When the children made the shape posters, they were able to talk with each other about which shapes went into what category. We were also able to connect the color of the week to the lesson when we reviewed the posters and I asked the children if they could find purple rectangles, triangles, or circles.

I learned that most of my children can identify their basic shapes. If I did the activity again though, I would go over how to identify the shapes before I did the nature walk. I would also do more to try to integrate the color purple into the lesson.
