Extract of sample "The Establishment of Personal and Professional Relationships"

As a preliminary matter, it is my desire to join Year Up in Cambridge because your organization’s goals are consistent with my own, because I firmly believe that I will improve my ability to serve my community, and because this opportunity offers experiences and personal relationships that I would otherwise never be able to access. Moreover, the integrated nature of your program, combining intensive classroom experience with a practical training component with reputable corporations, illustrates the type of socially responsible relationships between individuals and corporations that I believe is the foundation for progressive community relationships in the future.

In short, my interest in joining up with the Year Up program is motivated by my own personal belief in these types of programs and by my desire to serve my own community in the future. To be sure, my own background is surprisingly consistent with the aims espoused by the Year Up organization; although I am only twenty years of age, I have already demonstrated through actions that I would be an exemplary candidate for this type of program. I would be an exemplary candidate because I have a wide range of interests, both academic and in my community, and because I have already devoted myself to helping youth in my community.

For example, from an academic perspective, I am a keen student and I am particularly interested in math. Math interests me both theoretically, as an intellectual puzzle to be solved, and in its assortment of applications to the real world. From a community point of view, I have been extraordinarily active and devoted my time to helping other people as much as to simply enjoying myself. I love playing football and I have served as a youth mentor. I take great pride in listening to people with problems or difficulties and trying to help them find a positive solution.

I have been told that I possess strong leadership skills, that many of the youth in my neighborhood respect me and my advice, and I take great pride in allocating my time in order to help others. Through Year Up, I believe that I would gain additional skills and experiences with which I might use to help others more effectively and more comprehensively in the future. In this way, I am almost a representative candidate, meaning that many others will benefit from my participation in your program.

Regarding more specific goals, I am eager to combine my interest and aptitude in math with the technology courses and training that your organization offers. Although I am young, at twenty years of age, I have a vision of the future that suggests a more interdisplinary approach to social and business problems. Technology can no more solve important problems in isolation than can philosophy or ethics or law; quite the contrary, as your program acknowledges with its broadly conceived program, modern problem solving demands a fusing of disciplines, such as technology, leadership, and organizational management, in order to implement the most effective solutions.

I want to be a part of this interdisciplinary future, this notion that corporate social responsibility can empower individuals too often shut out of important positions, and I want to share my education with others to give them the same opportunities that I have been given in my life.In the final analysis, I believe that I am a model candidate because my goals are consistent with yours and because I firmly believe in empowering individuals through training, education, and the establishment of personal and professional relationships which can be used to help people and communities in need.
