1. Challenge
Perhaps one of the more tricky challenges I faced in life was my academic problems, most especially in Math. Even as a kindergarten tot, I knew back then that I was to have a problem with that “counting subject” in the coming years. Because in the following years, I found Mathematics not only boring but a subject that I was not adept at. I feared numbers and I feared solving problems which involved numbers. I told my parents and they just shrugged it off, and laughingly told me that they were not good in math too, when they were my age. Instead of being relieved, I felt worried about my future, my academic future; I thought then that being a kid meant no worries.
Second grade, third grade and fourth grade passed and I struggled to at least survive in math class. I felt isolated from the rest of the class by just the mere sight of them participating in recitations, taking a look at each other’s satisfactory score, whilst I hardly pass any quiz or seatwork at all. Whenever I get a grade that was barely passing, I felt happy while my classmates frown upon looking at theirs, despite the wide gap their scores possess over mine. I thought I was never meant to go to college if my math malady was not going to be resolved. I was a bright student in other subjects and my classmates sounded upset whenever I told them my math problems. I thought I was the only one who had it – excellence in other subjects and a loser at math.
I approached my Math teacher and told her that I feared flunking the subject and that it would not be unfair if she were not to give me any consideration; I deserved a failing grade. She had that look on her face that looked as if she understood my situation right away, as though she had also been through a struggle exactly like mine. “In the first place, why did you not come earlier? I was more than willing to boost your spirits up. When I saw you, I saw myself.” Right there and then, she had told me her story; she not only hated math when she was my age but failed a number of times, then got encouraged by her teacher. She had questioned me that how was I to conquer my all of my fears when I could not even look at math face to face. I felt rejuvenated and math was never the same since then. It was mind over matter.
2. Bertrand Russell – What I Have Lived For
For Bertrand Russell, the essence of his life revolved around his seemingly endless seeking for new knowledge, the search for love and a niche in this world, and the compassion for his fellow humans. For him, the equality among these three facets of his life defines the meaning of life itself. He strongly insinuated that nothing in the world can be deemed right without the presence of love and knowledge, the two things being the closest to heaven. The search for knowledge cannot be complete if love was yet to be found because it serves as the fountain of happiness in the midst a life of despair. The significance of mankind’s existence relies on his ability to love and search for new knowledge. But those two cannot be consummated without the presence of compassion – the thing that balances love and knowledge. However, compassion happens because of the sadness and misfortune prevailing over people. Compassion happens because man cannot do anything to alleviate the nature of life and those feeling compassion also suffer.
Given the chance, Russell uttered that he would live his life all over again.

...? Elementary and intermediate mathematics used to talk about functions and equations in terms of a two-dimensional coordinate system. However, as we move on to higher level mathematics, we are introduced to a three-dimensional coordinate system which is more representative of the actual world that we live in. Moreover, equations in two variables are represented graphically on a flat plane. In the case of equations in three variables, graphical representations are made in space, and these graphical representations are called surfaces. Consequently, when dealing with equations in three variables (or functions of two variables), we modify the values of two variables in order to get the value of the third variable. This paper... My mother who is more linguistically than me taught me how to speak, read and even write some simple words, as well as, count in English language. From these modest first steps, I could say that I had come on in leaps and bounds but does not necessarily mean that I never had some literacy in foreign language especially English. English is my second language so I can testify that I had faced many problems as an international student especially when trying to socialize with my friends and even reading it fluently has never been an easy task. College Math Math Problem

...Math Problem a) I constructed the first linear function based on the municipal solid waste data for 1970 and 1997 and the second linear function based on the data for 1980 and 1997. A dependent variable is the annual production of municipal solid waste in million tons. An independent variable is the number of years after 1960. Based on the municipal solid waste data from the graph, I received such numbers for independent and dependent variables for the models. Model 1 Model 2 Dependent Variable Independent Variable Dependent Variable Independent Variable 121 10 152 20 217 37 217 37 Model 1: 121 = a + b*10 217 = a + b*37 The solution is a=85.4, b=3.56. Therefore, the first linear function is: Annual MSW = 85.4+3.56*(Number of years after...

Social group and classes history of inequality

... are all materialistic in nature, and all through the ages, one social system has always replaced the previous ones due to the inherent conflicts arising from the inequalities in the system, "The history of all hitherto existing society is the history of class struggles" (Marx, CM 3). The feudal society has been replaced by the present day capitalist society or the 'bourgeois society'. The word 'bourgeoisie' stands of the 'modern capitalist' or the rich-moneyed section of the society. Capitalism, according to Marx, consists of both shared enterprise and unequal distribution of rewards. Therefore, the basic difference in the structure of economic production has changed the way we live, and gives rise to conflict. This is the source...

The Discourses of Psychology and History

Psychology as a field of discourse relies heavily on empirical evidence; being a social science, this empirical evidence is still subject to much subjective analysis. This is not to say that there is no room in chemistry for any sort of subjective analysis, but there is not nearly as much leeway as there would be in social science like psychology. This is the reason why there is such a contrasting difference in the way that theories are phrased in hard sciences and social sciences.

Concerning written assignments in psychology courses, there is a definite, approved approach that must be followed. Generally speaking, psychology paper assignments are not supposed to contain quotations from other papers; the findings of ano...

Cultural History Versus Political History: The Varying Methods of the Two Fathers of History

Even though they have these similarities and have both been bestowed with the same title, these two historians drastically differed in their approaches.

Herodotus had another title bestowed upon him; he was also called the “Father of Lies.” Much of what is known of him has been gathered from his own writings as few other sources are available from his actual life. It should also be noted that the veracity of this information is in question as Herodotus was known to invent much in his own work, and it was sometimes the practice in Ancient Greece to attribute events from the life of one person to another; for instance, it has been questioned if the accounts of Herodotus’ exile are only due to the fact th...

A Short History of Japanese Film Industry

The History of Halloween Festival

Halloween is a festival that takes its origin in the ancient Celtic festival known as Samhain (Rogers 11-21). Samhain is an Irish word and means the end of summer. It is a celebration of the end of the harvest season in Gaelic culture (Ronald). Additionally, it is also regarded as the "Celtic New Year" (Kevin 190–232). Conventionally, this was the time when the ancient Celtic pagans to take stock of goods and slaughter livestock for winter stores. This is a festival linked with many superstitions. For instance, the ancient Gaels thought that on October 31, the edge between the living and the departed peoples from their families was reduced, and the dead people came to cause danger for the people who are alive. They thought t...

Narrative Voice, Characterization, and Use of Settings in Catcher in the Rye and a Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian

The same is true of any writer. One is trying to get into a unique writing style, often without deliberate inclinations-- the style emerges of its own, -- but sometimes, the narrative voice as a writing technique is consciously employed by the writer. To start with, it is necessary for the writer to select which POV (point of view) to use.

The author’s persona of a fictional narrative can contribute to or mar the success of the story. Much depends on the plot of the story and how the author wishes to develop it. What is the emotional content of the story as a whole and how the individual emotional levels contribute to the total success of the story? There should not be any artificiality about the development of th...
