The program is meant to bring together children and older adults to interact and learn about their life experiences and cultures. The program seeks to bridge the cultural and experiential gaps that have developed between young people and adults which is evident in politics and the media. Live and Learn is a three-week program to be held over Summer. Old people and young people are paired together, as well as persons from different cultures and backgrounds. This is to enhance dialog, understanding and camaraderie. This chapter will undertake the following: 1. Application of MCE to enhance the interactions between the participants in the program. 2. An analysis of the program within which MCE will be applied and 3. A reflective report on the use of the MCE framework. Live and Learn Program Culture is the way a group of people live and it represents a set of relatively stable patterns that describes a group of people's ideas and thoughts (Shaw, 2012). Hofstede describes culture as the software of the mind which describes a pattern of behavior that a group of people are likely to exhibit (2010). Culture has been defined as “the arts and other manifestations of human intellectual achievement regarded collectively; the customs, arts, social institutions, and achievements of a particular nation, people, or other social group; or the attitudes and behavior characteristic of a particular social group.” (Oxford Dictionary, 2010). This means that culture defines the way a group of people behave and a group of people do things. The differences in culture gives way to various misunderstandings and disagreement. This include various arguments and interactions that often turn out to lead to conflict and societal problems. Culture varies across different people with different origins, orientations and age-gaps. This defines the divisions amongst members of the society and plays a vital role in identifying the conflicts that exists amongst different individuals and groups of peoples. The society is faced with a constant need for the redefinition of its cultures and systems. This is because the dominant culture in a given society undertakes various levels of changes and transformations over time. And this often leads to differences in traditions and differences in activities. However, this often leads to conflicts. There is therefore the need for some kind of friendly and less confrontational approach to be employed in helping to deal with social and cultural differences. That is what the Live and Learn program seeks to attain. Age is a major factor in the definition of conflict lines and tensions in different cultures around the world. Youth culture involves numerous challenges and changes that occur amongst young people from infancy through to adulthood. This involves a lot of changes that goes on through the generation and it is linked to the restlessness and exuberance of the age. Older people tend to prefer more stable and traditional approaches to issues and matters in the society which tends to lead to conflicts in many ways and forms. Young people, and especially adolescents and teenagers, are in the process of building an identity, and much of that identity will come from the culture in which they dwell. If a young person matures in a culture that is stable, values education and achievement, and is prosperous, then that youth will be more likely to transcend into adulthood successfully.
