My is Jane, and my Korean is Juyoung. I came from Korea when I was in grade 9. I am currently pursuing Linguistics, as the major degree and minor in Education (Curriculum & Instruction plan). I am really excited because this is my last semester before graduation. Ever since I was young, I already dreamed of becoming a teacher. I had the privilege of meeting many good teachers and had enjoyed my school time, so I was greatly inspired and encouraged by them. When I was in Korea, we usually had to follow what the teacher commands.
When I first came to attend classes in Canada, I was so surprised by the diversity in teaching approach. The teaching style here was so free and different from Korea. I took visual art class because I was more interested in personal expression rather than just drawing. My teacher, ‘Ms.Libera’ was so kind and supportive that I surely remembered her name. She always encouraged me to have fun in the class. Although I was not good at drawing, her encouragement proved that I have artistic abilities that were developed through positive encouragement.
Through the experience, I realized that teaching style and the holistic support of a teacher is very important for a student. I think a teacher’s role is not confined to merely educating the students in various subjects. I view their role as more encompassing. Teachers should be role models so that they will be equipped with the needed knowledge, possess a noble character and be responsible individuals of the society. Teachers have a great impact on the students’ lives that are continually manifested in their future.
Therefore, as a teacher, I would like to guide my students towards the right attitudes and help them discover their appropriate roles in society. I acknowledge the importance of being responsible to be acquainted with each student as an individual; to understand unique needs, appropriate learning style, social and cultural background, interests, and abilities. To prepare myself for the profession, I envision applying for the position of a teaching assistant and be enriched in both teaching and learning experiences.
I hope that I will eventually apply theoretical and practical knowledge, skills and abilities to mentor students and exemplify traits of a genuinely good and effective teacher.
