Kristina, Mariah. Experimental Education; Part-Time Jobs. March 2003. Kristina (23) observes that many of the students’ who engage themselves in part-time jobs are foreign students who need to provide for their fees as well as improve and learn their language, especially if their language does not match with that of that country. According to Kristina, part-time jobs have helped foreign students to learn about different cultures and improve their language. This is because, they are able to meet many different people in the course of the day, as well as mix and speak with them about customs, cultures, and festivals, at their workplaces.
Tony, Mark. and Mark, Brewell. How Students Search for Vocational Employment .1997. There are both positive and negative impacts of part-time jobs on the students. These students gain experience and numerous skills from their interaction with people at work. They get to gain knowledge about life and improve their communication skills by improving their language (Tony & Mark, 17). When they start earning, the student achieves independence, financially, which leads to development in skills of managing money, as they plan their budget to meet their needs.
Tony and Mark (19) assess that in gaining experience in financial management, the student appreciates the value attached to money and hence, they become aware of the importance of saving either for emergency or the future. This knowledge will help the students when they finally complete studying and get employed. In an effort to balance time scheduled for school work and job, time management gains a serious and crucial meaning. The students need to complete their educational work on time and also be punctual to work, this calls for serious time management.
Sheena Loren. Partners for a Better Future; Detroit Compact Works with Educational Institutions. May 1994. Sheena (14) asserts that although these students gain financially and socially, sometimes their normal living is altered. For example, they have to sleep late when they work, especially where they work till midnight. This will affect their performance during school hours as their concentration span will be lowered. Poor class concentration might lead to low marks in examinations. Some students engage themselves in manual labor which means that they will expose their bodies to heavy loads beyond its adapting capability, these students end up with injuries which might lead to absenteeism from classes which means missing some lessons.
Also, this exposure to heavy manual work leads to fatigue hence the students will not be able to fully participate in the in-class activity. Conclusion Part-time jobs are mainly caused by the need for students to raise school fees, especially among foreign students. Though others also do it in order to interact and learn different cultures, this is, however, a minor cause. There are both positive and negative effects of part-time jobs among college students. The positive effects are interaction and financial support, while negative effects are fatigue, poor concentration in studies, physical injury and psychological among others.
These have made many students who engage in part-time jobs to perform poorly in their studies.
